No magnet in new trans filter

/ No magnet in new trans filter #21
I just changed my fluid yesterday on my 2520. Not the same filter - mine is M801034 - but still a 2-series. Then saw this thread. Of course it worked like that. Went out and looked at the old filter and indeed it had magnets in it like the suction screen did. So now what do I do? The tractor is at 300 hours. Since the manual doesn't mention the magnets in the filter at all I'm wondering if they are mainly there for the initial break-in?? Or is this needed all the time.

How much fluid will I lose if I unscrew the filter and drop the magnets back in? Perhaps I can get a helper to stick his thumb over the big outlet tube once I get the filter off to reduce the fluid loss.

You won't loose much fluid. I believe you can transfer the magnets. Shouldn't hurt either

My guess because they don't mention it in the manual it's just for the break in, but if you transferred the magnets they would continue to collect metal and is an advantage not a disadvantage. My filter is located horizontal so I was thinking about parking it on a slope sideways so the fluid is to the opposite side of the filter, maybe that will help from the trans fluid from running out, or maybe like sisuppower said you won't loose that much. Hey why don't you take off you filter and let us know what happens:laughing:

Looks like the shorter one to me. No number on it tho

The LVU800097 measures 4-3/4" long. If it's shorter than that it will be the LVA16054

That's a good point. I could jack up the right side of the tractor or park on a slope to try to minimize fluid loss. The "do it right" part of me wants to replace them while the "stop wasting time" part of me says if the manual doesn't mention it and there are still magnets in the suction screen then **** with it.

Unfortunately the do it right part of my brain always wins, because if I don't it will keep bugging me. :D

As you mentioned, you have magnets in the screen. The manual says to do the first service at 50 hours, did you skip it and wait until 300 hours. Was that the original filter with the magnets in it.

I purchased it with 298 hours on it. No way to know what was previously done. The fluid looked clear but the drain plugs didn't show much sign of having a wrench on them. I'd suspect it was the original filter & fluid. Which is why I did all the maintenance myself now.

I'm sure it was the original because they had the magnets in them. Buy these and you won't have to remove the filter, you can get one for your oil filter too. If money is no object. Lol

Interesting. Maybe I can just ziptie the existing magnets to the outside of the filter and call it good!

They will stick to the outside of the filter by themselves but I don't think they would be strong enough magnets to do much, if you read the filtermag frequently asked questions tab, they give their whole spill and sells pitch and why standard magnets don't work like theirs.

When I was doing my 50 hour service I spent an hour or so looking for the transmission drain plug washer, I filtered the old oil with a pair of nylons, nothing, I looked on the floor, nothing. The washer was stuck to the case and was the same color metal as the case and the washer is painted black into the case, making it look like part of the case until I popped it off with a screw driver. So if anyone can't find the washer after you remove the drain plug I hope this saves you some time and aggregation.
