No Squirrels This Year

We normally have a lot of squirrels over the winter making a mess around our bird feeders. This year there are none, zero, haven’t seen a one. This house is surrounded by apple orchard, and we have one barn but is pretty cleaned up. Just wondering what everybody else is seeing this year.

We have a gazillion ground squirrels here and you are more than welcome to come get all you want. They are a huge nuisance.

I think that they moved into my place. For a couple of years there were none around but this past winter they've been abundant, and it's going to take me a while to clean up the mess that they made in my shed.

I have literally never had as many squirrels as I have on my property as I have lately.

Got to the point I set out a couple of dozen traps with poison in them and the populations had gone to zero so I stopped filling the traps.
Sure enough, a month later I see them again in large numbers. Time to start filling the traps again.

Why poison a squirrel?

I try to keep the squirrels around. My dogs love chasing them. Not sure what they would do if they caught one. Its our entertainment to watch them run for the fence with 5 Schipperkes on their tail.

Having squirrels around keeps the bobcat, coyotes and foxes from going after my chickens and ducks.

I've taken out two tree rats this past week with a 22 pellet rifle that were raiding the bird feeders. I put them on a log at the back of my property and they're gone the next day. They had gotten into my barn a few years ago and damaged some antique furniture and seasonal clothing we had stored up there, so I'm not too fond of them. And come summer they seem to like the corn I grow and pretty much wiped it out one year.

Way down here besides the Eastern Gray Squirrels we also have the Fox Squirrels they are way larger . Some people call them monkey squirrels also . Anybody else have the fox squirrels in there state ? There a site to see !

We have both.

We have locally:

fox squirrels (the big, fat brown ones)
grey squirrels (smaller grey ones)
red squirrels (even smaller red ones)
southern flying squirrels (small, nocturnal, rarely seen)
black squirrels (these are a subgroup of the eastern gray squirrels)
