North Texas "cold snap"

/ North Texas "cold snap" #141
We ended up with about 8" of snow. Started yesterday morning and stopped this morning. Haven't had this much snow since the early '80's. We've had lots of rain this winter and the ground is already saturated, pasture is a mud bog.

Jesse, that's a fine looking GSD you've got there. How's he like the snow?

I woke up to a good 6 inches of snow with a few areas that were deeper. It was absolutely beautiful out there, and I spent hours walking around, and taking pictures.

I lost power last night and I'm on generator right now, so I'm waiting for the power to come back before downloading pictures. I don't know what will happen if I lose power while downloading them, but don't want to risk it either.

Now that it's starting to melt, it's such a big mess out there. I'm glad to have it today, but will be happy if that's it for the year. One day of snow is more then enough!!! LOL Now I'm ready for some dry weather and some seat time to get some of the branches that broke off, into my burn pile.

They loved the snow as long as they could come back in the house. The dogs were rooting around in the snow and rolling in it. Not something they see very often.

Jesse, those are some really pretty pictures. I particularly like the way the snow hangs on your cattle panel fence. Thanks for posting them. I know everyone gets tired of looking at my pictures. I post so many that everyone knows about every detail of my place.

Eddie, I hope you get power back soon and can post those pictures. I can't imagine what your place looks like with that much snow.

Well, here are some pictures from our snow tour yesterday. The Kawasaki Mule in 4WD was awesome for getting around crunching through the snow. Some hills made us back off and take a 2nd run, but that was because of mud under the tires more than snow. The first picture is from the end of my driveway looking down to my house. The other pictures are pretty self-explanatory. The final picture is the snow from the roof "overflowing" my gutter this morning. I've never seen anything like this in Texas.:)

I think 12" of snow is usually in the area of 1" precip. It varies a lot of course.

Yep, Dave, I'd heard 10" of snow to 1" of precipitation in the past, and the Dallas Morning News this morning has a story about our record snowfall (12.5" at DFW airport) and mentions the 10" to 1" measurement but also that it can vary all the way from 5" to 1" to 20" to 1". They also say our electric company estimates 206,000 home without power and will take all weekend to get it all restored.

Okay, just three more pictures, I promise.

Here are two shots of a couple of our kitties. They were so sure that they wanted to go out, but once in the snow, they weren't too crazy about it.:D

The first picture is of Batman standing on the aerobic aerator tank. notice that the heat from the tank makes it the first to melt all the snow. The second picture is Punkin' hiding under the glider swing.

I included another picture of our house from the road. I like this shot because you can see over the gullies and down the valley leading to the ponds and lake. All the trees covered in snow sure make this a pretty shot. Also, notice the cell phone tower off in the distance. I think that's why my cell phone modem works so well. We sorta have a straight shot to the cell tower.:)

Hey Bird, did you get any of the snow cleared off the tree hanging over your power line? I'd say that the snow on our decks is only about half as deep this morning as it was yesterday. I shoveled a path from our driveway up to our front door and cleared a path to the wood box, but that's all the shovelling I'm gonna do.

Jim, we got lucky. I didn't do anything at all about the trees, but yesterday as the snow melted off, the limbs sprung back into place with no damage to anything. I saw in the newspaper that 206,000 homes are without power and restoring it to all will take all weekend. There was mention of limbs springing back and hitting power lines when the snow falls off. I never thought about the loss of the snow causing a problem.:D
