I bet you could connect the button battery holders together in parallel and feed them both with one battery pack. The unit draws very little power considering it had button cells and the AAA batts have much more capacity than the button cells. Less weight and less clutter in the helmet.

I made measurements but no you cannot run them from one power supply. Some IC's require a Plus and Minus referenced to ground supply. Apparently something on the circuit board requires a dual supply in this design. Many OP Amps are set up this way to require a plus and minus supply. But yes I though of that, but no go.

A few posts prior to the one aczlan did, I posted some links to hack/fix these type of helments. Probably not worth it though if the replacement for $12+ works!
I have been very happy with my replacement screen. It has replaceable batteries in it and the adjuster fit right into the hole on the helmet from the old one.
