Um, no, define "perfectly and fine". My UOA's on my older BX says no & to prove it use these oils in your units and post.
post your reports.

and re-read my above posts it explains "perfectly and fine"

I worked in a logging camp and they had an 849 KW with a 12V71,Detroit, 5960 Alison that would hit the scale regularly at 500,000 LBS, one was called 2103, when I left she had 23,000hrs on that motor. 30weight or sometimes 40 weight chevron oil, nothing fancy, just oil that did the job.The synthetic in the report I posted was Shaffer's, purple crap.
The cheapest oils you can buy today are better than the best we had twenty years ago.
What I see is people buying the most expensive oil and never changing it because someone said they do not have to, they never check the gear oil levels or grease it, yet they feel real good because they bought a fancy oil.
I see people a lot that will spend money on something they heard on line yet do not have the proper antifreeze protection. They will buy a fancy chrome rad cap, but never check the level or strength.

swo3, Please post for us to all see- the muiltitude of tractors that have had an early death because the owner didn't use synthetic in the engine crancase, and for that reason only. You will need to show proof that the tractor would still be fine if synthetic was used in the same manner as the dyno. After you do that, I'll post all the tractors that have been dismantled for other reasons. OK?

The synthetic oil salesmen on this site will ignore real world examples like this.
They try to get the reader to micro-focus on the tech of the oil. It helps create an irrational fear.

Didn't expect my "I didn't start an oil thread" post to turn into a serious oil thread. :)

JP33... what rpm did that monster diesel run? If it was loping along at 1500rpms, it might have different requirements than my BX that runs 3200.

I don't know, I just thought it may be an apples and oranges comparison.

I think you have a 1 liter liquid cooled engine making 25hp, 3.3 quarts oil.
25hp/liter is a very low output for it's size ( think of 5L 100hp, or 1L bikes 150hp 13k rpm), and 3200 rpm's for that size is pretty pedestrian. Internally it's feet/second that matter and a larger engine with lower rpm can actually have a faster surface speed sheering the oil, that's part of why they run lower rpm's. Spend your money on good filters and change the dino as recommended to get the contaminents out .

The 12V71's they had Allisons, in then they would run between 1,000, and 1,600 RPM unless held manually in a gear, then they were governed at 2,300 Pull to 2,150. The Alison had a retarder in them, 750 HP breaking, they ran water to all the brake drums. One nozzle on each wheel on the truck and two on each wheel on the trailer. The flow was regulated by air pressure.
Those engines use the same technology as today's units the oil is used not only as a lubricant but as the main coolant. If you have the coin to run fancy oils do so, just change it, do not get caught up in the hype about oil that lasts a life time, because it will, a short lifetime.
Just a thought!
