You raise a point Ron. Maybe its why we take each other for granted at times, although I have known some people whose deaths were alot easier to take than some of the animals we've lost.

My exact thoughts although a lot of people do not understand it... 2 weeks ago i went out to feed Abby my 15 yo yellow lab.. She was walking in circles and falling down... Called the vet they told us bring her in, we thought she had a stroke at 15 I knew it would not be good she had been going down hill fast the last 6 months.

While waiting for our appointment I went to the property to put the backhoe back on for the inevitable.... The Vet said with steriods and atibiotics and time she may come back to the quality of life before this event.. I forgot the diagnosis but basically she was VERY dizzy her eyes where even going back an forth like a childs eyes who has been spinning in circles.. We chose to put her to sleep... I was not man enough to stay in the room while they did it and now I regret it..

We buried her back behind the pond she loved to swim in under some shade trees.... I would much rather take a *** whooping in a bar fight then go through that..

Chuck.

Maybe I'm a bad person but my animals mean more to me than a lot of people. My wife and I don't have any children, well human ones anyway. :)

You are not alone. I'm pretty sure I would grieve more at the loss of one of my dogs than I would many many people. It's not that I wouldn't miss the people but the dogs are literally part of my family.

Agreed. I consider my pets part of the family for sure!

This was the gaurdian of my family and property, he will be missed! My wife was never afraid to walk at night in cougar country or wherever with this big guy at her side. They will all be cherished. My thoughts are with anyone who loses a pet.

Not that it makes it any easier but the alternative to the anguish of losing a loved pet is going through life without ever having the joy of a loyal and loving pet. As hard as these times are, remember that the memories and the sorrow come from having had a great companion for many years.

Sorry to hear of your loss Rebel. I know how you feel as I had to dig my Molly's grave last fall when I knew she had less then 6 months to live.

I lost my Molly (a black dane) on Feb 25, 2008 to heart disease. She was only 8.5 and my constant companion-hiking, snowshoeing, river fishing and hunting. She slept on my bed every night and outlasted several relationships.

My other Dane, Delmar, who came as a puppy when Molly was 3 was despondent for 4 months after her death.

This grouse season won't be the same without her trying to eat every bird I shoot :(

A friend of mine sent me this poem when my Molly died. He had lost his two labs a few months before.

"Copyright 1992 Constance Jenkins, All Rights Reserved" Weep not for me though I am gone
Into that gentle night
Grieve if you will, but not for long
Upon my soul's sweet flight.
I am at peace, my soul's at rest
There is no need for tears.
For with your love I was so blessed
For all those many years.
There is no pain, I suffer not,
The fear now all is gone.
Put now these things out of your thoughts,
In your memory I live on.
Remember not my fight for breath
Remember not the strife
Please do not dwell upon my death,
But celebrate my life.
