Highly recomended. Generally not used on larger AG style tractors but then again they have enough beef not to need them in the first place (with the normal smaller 3pt hoes)

As others noted, you CAN run one without a subframe, you just need to be carefull how you use it. Abuse can lead to snaping the tractor in half at the trans/engine connection.

So do you need one? no, but you run an increased risk of destroying your tractor also.
Ive been thinking of a BH for my branson. The dealer told me I would need a sub frame for the branson BH. Is a sub frame necessary with a 3point back hoe?

Just so you guys would know, I have discovered the best tool for probing for a septic tank or grease trap should you feel the need to do so. Had a four foot piece of rebar maybe 3/8 or so. Push it in ground til I'm sure a lid wouldn't be that deep then on to next spot. Continue all over yard except for one small teeny tiny tee nine see area and then get on tractor and promptly park back tire over that spot. Hey it works, found the lid, er rubble left from the lid.:mad:
