Maybe he wanted to use the F-150 for a little night fishing. lol:D

He might have wanted to go spotlight a few fish and figured that headlights would work better than a lantern.

I pulled our boat out of the shed one day to get something out that was behind it and when I went to back it in I could not move it. I put my Chevy 2550 HD in 4wd and all I did was spin. It finally dawned on me that I had not plugged the lights in. After I plugged them in it rolled so easy.

A practical question that was raised above (never towed a boat trailer). Do the bearings have hubs you can slap a grease gun on, or do you have to take them off and repack them every year?

There are 3 main types of bearings setups. First is the standard type is where you have to remove the bearings to service. The next type is just the standard with the addition of buddy bearings, and the last type is a Dexter design called Easy Lube, that uses a hallow spindle with holes drilled at a position between the two bearings. It has a zerk on the end and as you pump grease in it is pushed from the center through both bearings. This type is probably the best for boat applications.

would I be correct in assuming that sealed bearings don't work with boat trailers because of the submersion?

And whats your experience with bearing buddies been? On boat trailers that is. No problems for me on things I've put them on.

Normally on a car or truck you don't pack the entire inside of the hub full of grease, you only pack the bearings themselves and maybe a light film of grease inside the hub.

With the bearing buddies or Easy Lubes you will be filling the entire inside of the hub with grease. But on a boat trailer this can be a good thing. Besides greasing the bearings if you pump it full just before launching you will have a slight pressure inside to keep water out. The new grease will also cool things down a bit. When a trailer has been towed some miles and then backed into cold water a negative pressure can result inside the hub making it more likely to drqw water in past the seal; the lube systems can help minimize this problem.

Never seen sealed bearings on any trailer, period. Bearing buddies do great. Not as good a EZ Lube but the next best thing. I even put them on my car hauler.

Very interesting. I have never seen a sealed bearing in all the trailers I have worked on and that has to be well over 200. I always said I was going to make a Disc Brake conversion using GM front bearing off front wheel drive cars like Malibu's. They are a dime a dozen but have a high failure rate, maybe 65,000 miles or so on average, but plenty long for the average trailer user.

It would give trailer users the best of everything, sealed bearings and disc brakes.
