If storing for any period of time add a biocide

Both @scootr and @California are right.

Back in the old days, especially in the midwest, the off road diesel still had sulfer added.

That went away about 20 years ago and they are exactly the same thing now, except the dye.

Run road diesel in my New Holland. No different than red diesel except for dye, not enough volume to have fuel card for no-tax fuel. Do run an additive winter and summer for extra lube in injectors. Also gives me anti-gel in cold weather. Would do the same with red fuel if I used it

Here you just go to a station selling off road diesel and fill up your container(s). No card is needed.

In my area no station selling red fuel. Only 2 places in my area that carry off road, both have card readers and send you a bill monthly. One un-manned set of pumps, another at a farm service store but have to have a card issued by state for purchase. Used to have 1 distributor with red diesel with no card required but went out of business years ago. Do have several distributors that will deliver fuel with 250 gal./min. with account,

Likewise here, no ID needed to buy red diesel. It's simply another pump at the gas station in rural areas.

As for sulfur, it is common in raw petroleum, and costly to refine down to low-sulfur. That's why modern low-sulfur road diesel is more expensive than gasoline. It used to be half the cost because it didn't have complex refining.

I've read that Valero in Houston(?) was the first to invest in de-sulfuring additions to their refinery. This made it possible to refine Venezuelan high-sulfur crude at a time when the price of that variety had fallen due to lesser demand.

And the variety called 'sweet' crude, means naturally low sulfur.

Same in PA. No authoritarian dictators crushing truckers or farmers too much here (yet).
We already have way too many regulations.

Luckily lots of stations here in north idaho carry off road diesel and ethanol free regular gas. No fuel cards or any of the foolishness.

I've had more issues with off-road diesel fuel vs. truck stop diesel fuel.

The reason being, off-road fuel sits in the tanks so much longer and is not fresh like a frequent truck stop is. Old diesel in storage tanks in off-road and on-road is not a place to buy your diesel fuel.

Buy fresh (newer) diesel to keep your fuel system running its best.

Hmmm, how so?
What if a diesel vendor moves a lot of dyed fuel? Mine does. Never a problem in 12 years. I probably bought 20,000 gallons from him. Not one fuel related failure in 8 different off road diesel engines.

Don’t you think just the opposite could be true? I do.

100% correct.

100% correct.

I’m pretty convinced that the reason red diesel has a reputation for being dirty is people put it in nasty transfer tanks where the road fuel guys usually just drive to the station and pump it in eliminating that problem. It’s not uncommon for the pickups bed transfer tanks to have the nozzle just tossed in the bed collecting dirt which isn’t helping either.

My local station has both. No cards needed etc.. Only thing that has ever happened was when the cost of fuel went sky high. People was filling cans and then using it in Rd. vehicles. They wouldn't let me use Red gas cans. They had to be yellow. INKY. think about it. You can see the Red dye with a Yellow 5 Gal. can a mile away!!. This is true!!

Similar. I built a fuel caddy from a carwash soap barrel.

Cashier said it wasn't DOT-rated to carry fuel on the highway so forget it.

I had to go another mile and get road diesel. I put the caddy on Craigslist.

You could buy a decal to put on the drum.

I get off road diesel at a station and nobody has ever said what or how to fill the containers. I even use one red 6 gal. container for diesel and nothing has ever been said. Credit card is used and on my way. I think the cashier is busy enough that they couldn't care less. I doubt they would call 911 about the color of your fuel can.
