I am saddened every time someones opinions or humor are lost to the "Recycle Bin"...
I gain much from the divergence of opinion here on TBNet....I often chase citations found here, learning something new, and when I choose to post, I never leave a healthy argument unchanged...at least just by finding new things NOT to like...
The politics of "Offense" is a just a weak form of "Ad Hominem" attack...and cowardly at that.
After unsheathing the blade of debate in an open arena, opting to test the weight of their ideas in open combat and having their treasured opinions take a philosophical cut or two, the user of the "Offense" stratagem attacks the honor of the other party, provoking increasingly heated retaliation and then hides behind a shield of "Hurt Feelings" until the Mods rightly call a halt to the engagement.
Kick up enough dust in the sandbox and someone will put a stop to Recess...
How sad...it eventually become a "Tyranny of the Offended"....
I love a good scrap...just ask Precious Bride...but you can argue without rancor, disagree without belittling, engage in heated debate while maintaining simple good manners and somewhere between the stony foreheads of the most vociferous of adversaries, (me and Precious Bride, for example!) can often be found a razor thin sliver of accommodation.
I suppose it's human nature to want to win....everything....even an argument in cyberspace....some folks just can't tolerate even the slightest loss of "face"....
I believe that a sense of humor is inextricably linked with a sense of irony...and the ability to endure a bit of self-deprecation and still keep a good attitude indicates a more mature soul...
But, no matter how you cut it, the worst point in any argument is when you realize that YOU are wrong....it takes a really big person to back down gracefully from the parapets and say it...
Over the years, I have found more ways to eat crow than Bubba Blue had for shrimp....
Anyway - I like to argue...finding a way to do it with gusto and stay within the bounds set by the Mods is the key....and if you care to disagree with me....?
...it is my fondest wish that when you reach your home safely tonight, your Mom doesn't run out from under the porch and bite you in the ###...
