I didn't realize that. I thought as long as devices was insulated from metal container it was safe. It's not like taking a direct hit from a lightning bolt.

I don't think you need the ground ... just skin effect. Lineman in the field walking on the lines aren't grounded.

This is true. They are part of the circuit. But notice they never come in contact with a ground source. To get the energy to pass around you as opposed through you, you need a ground path.

I never go anywhere without my hat and ground wire. They try to get me at the airports though.
