when i first moved here in 1996, i had to clear an area of fir trees for my house. when i went to the city to get building permit i asked if i need a permit to cut trees.....they gave me a blank stare. asked me if their my trees. i said yes. they said go nuts.

On trees:
Hey here in Quebec a neighbor was issued a (mandatory) permit to to cut DEAD trees.
That was conditional on his planting replacements.
His property is actually dense forest.

I have more than half forest, but if I want to cut any big tree down, need a permit.
They seem to have lightened up on the dead Ash trees. Can't imagine dozens of dead trees at $75 each for a permit!
When I first got here, I cut down some large trees that I felt were too close to the house. Someone called the town on me and I got fined $75x2 for each tree. Mind you I have probably close to a thousand trees still left......

Last year I purchased a full collection of 80v battery powered lawn tools... mower, blower, trimmer, pole hedge trimmer, and two batteries. Overall I thought they worked well and battery life was enough for me to be out there working for two hours (not nonstop use for two hours but that included at least an hour of continuous use). The one tool that let me down a bit was the blower. You really miss the 190-200+ mph power when you go down to battery which is in the 160mph range. Also the tube was three pieces and wouldn't stay together.

I'm the end I returned all of them to Amazon and hired a gardener who users gas powered equipment. But without a doubt, battery equipment has come a long way and in time I'm sure we will be happy with the alternative. Same goes for electric vehicles.

I see a lot of people complaining about electric vehicles or lawn tools yet we use battery powered drills, phones, computers, and obviously power our homes with electricity.

Come back in 20 years and most guys on this site will be driving electric or fuel cell trucks and loving them. That's my prediction.

I have a 40V Greenworks 16" chain saw.
I still have My Stihl gas saw, but I don't use it.
I am 80 years old, and don't cut wood for heat.
The little battery powered saw does a fine job on trees up to 12".

I don't live in Oakland, but I do live in California. They can pry my Stihl gas trimmer from my cold dead hands.

20 years is a long time for technology to improve.

One town south of me is very environmentally conscious. They were the first around here to ban plastic bags and they recently banned gas lawn tools. In my town however, they still allow it and I'm guessing they will until the state mandates otherwise. Probably 2030-2035 or so is my guess, similar to the timeline on gas powered vehicles.

I was surprised the ban did not mention potential for starting fire instead of pollution. Then again it California.

Reminder: political commentary will be deleted. You can discuss specific policies related to the use of equipment but please keep your opinions about California out of the topic.

Sent from my beach chair watching surfers and waves in San Diego. 😄 🏄‍♂️🏖️
