Is it time to revert to the Model T, the Stanley Steamer or the 1934 Chrysler Dyna flow?

Stanley Steamer sounds good, I have a good supply of wood and water :) I wonder if the boilers ever blew up? Would that be a recall?

Well guys, I am probably a little older than you, but when I was a young salesman, calling on the Big 3 auto industry, if you drove aforeign car (Japanese), you parked a mile away from HQ...
In 1988 I bought a self propelled Lawn mower from WW Grainger, which was a MTD (or what ever their brand name was ) with a "Briggs and Stratton" IC engine, made in Milwaukee, by American workers( not folks in Yokahama).\
My colegues told me what a piece of crap the American product was , compared to "HONDA" a magnificent Japanese product.
I bought the MTD for $300 instead of the HONDA for $600.
Fast forward 20 years...
All I ever did was change the Oil and the plug every few years, and sharpen the blade..... It still runs like New.....
Who is the D___ Head Now!!!
HONDA..... ??

hi johno.. i agree some what with your post, i've been pulling wrenches since the 70's and have seen a lot of very nice equipment and a lot of crap being pushed on us, remember the big 3 junk that was introduced, Covair.. for the money grabbing HQ not wanting to spend an extra $12.00 to correct a front end problem, Ford with the Pinto not installing a $4.00 piece of plastic, Dodge with their wonderfully big glove boxes for all the ignition resistors?? Yes i also think of the Hyundia Pony.. Mazda rotary pickups, Datsun B210, Skoda,VW,Saab and the list continues,... the main difference is that many of the manufactures that are doing good today have corrected these problems and have made QUALITY the first job NOT PROFIT.
Ford took that to heart in the late 80's and payed the price to get there, where GM just keep shipping junk and the people kept bending over and taking it because it was the GM mother ship and look at them now.
I'm happy for any company to that makes a profit AND builds a good product but the employes from corporate to the line workers to the salesman have to take it to heart also and think of the person who is spending their hard earned money on something they rely on daily.
It really upsets me when i see a union person on strike for more money, more benefits and more holidays... yes everyone deserves a proper pay check but then they are only installing 3 screws and 2 bolts and making 3 times what the person who has to fix the junk?// thats what the problem is.. these companies also have to stop pushing all these technologies on us. Why do we need a computer to open and close a window.. build the signal light flasher into the BCM computer... electric motor controlled steering... WHY???? the cost for making these is in the $1000's and again WHY???
sorry for the rant but it really burns me to see this happening and there is nothing we can do but wait for the other shoe to fall...Jim

Could it be you just got a good one? Or your maintenance skills are a little better. My next door neighbor is a commercial landscaper and has tons of equipment. I do all the maintenance. Nothing with a B/S last and he would now take a Tecumeh over a B/S. Kawasaki and Honda engines last 10 times over a B/S on average.

He has about 10 pump units running 5.5 Honda's or even now the $125 Harbor Freight knock offs. All these pumps came with B/S engines and they would last 2 seasons max. The Honda's would last 5 but cost a little more. We gave the HF engines a try about 3 years ago and not a single break down. So they have proven to outlast the B/S engines at 1/2 the price and run nearly as long as the Honda's.

The bottom line is all manufactures make mistakes. Uncle Sam now has a stake in GM so they are going to do whatever it takes to help them out. You could not give me a GM. They have proven over and over they lack competence at both the top office and the assembly line. All companies make mistakes but they wrote the book.

Aw, maybe we should switch to a wood gas model!

The Stanley Steamer twin brother's hometown is nearby in Kingfield, Maine. They have a small museum I should visit someday.

I am guessing they parked the steamers for most of the winter, there weren't that many plowed roads anyways back then. Can't imagine dealing with water and steam boiler when it's below freezing for long stretches.
