Seriously, +1 to the seal and carry on... Put a spare on the shelf if your machine is mission critical. I find having a spare of something pretty well guarantees I'll never need THAT part!

Thanks guys. Really appreciate it. I AM purchasing a spare wheel motor, as having the rig down for 3 weeks is a real pain, right in the middle of summer!

These motors are rated for 2000 hours (depending on bearing load and RPM). So, as a general rule, failures should be pretty rare.

Yowsa, I had no idea they were rated so high. That's terrific. I might never need the spare. On the other hand, it's often true that when you don't have one, then you need it (like I do now...)

I must have got a bad batch. Have replaced both front motors, 1st failed at around 850 hours and the other at about 1000. They do get a lot of stress though, as I frequently 3 wheel on hillsides. Trying to avoid that as much as possible by lifting the mower slightly when I see a wheel in the air.
