Number of keys with tractor purchase?

There's a reason for military vehicles not having a key I would assume. Suppose someone accidently took a key out from habit and then there is a fire fight while your fumbling looking for a key.

And more practically you could lock any enlisted Marine ranked below Sgt inside an empty padded room naked with two bowling balls and come back an hour later and they will have broken one and lost the other.

My favorite was the extra barrels on the M249 SAW machine guns. Each gun had two barrels. Gunners would often loose the spare barrel out in the field. We would have to retrace our steps and find where they dropped the barrel. When I was Sgt and it happened in my squad I would get a boot lace or a piece of para cord and make the gunner wear the spare barrel around his neck, everywhere. Sleep, shower, didn't matter, everywhere. And had to explain to everyone that asked that he was a dumba$$ and that was the only way he could keep up with it and not loose it. Never had repeat offenders.

It almost seems silly to have keys for the tractor with the exception of keeping children from starting the tractor. Since they are all keyed alike, and when the ignition gets older, you can practically start the tractor with a screw driver.[...]

I've been readin this thread with interest, but i have to verify what I'm starting to understand here: Do you all mean that my Kioti CK20 uses the same key as all others, so anyone who has one can start mine? And that anyone who knows this could go to a Kioti dealer and get an extra key ("I lost mine, Can you help me out?"), and then come by and start and drive off my tractor? :(

Call me naive if this is the case, but I have to ask.

In fact, not just CK20, but all recent Kioti's probably use the same key.. I know Kubota keys of at least all the L and I think M series are alike. I am betting my DK35se and your CK20 are all samey same:eek:

Just what James said, it's a scary thought. Also proper justification for a nice barn/shop/tractor storage place:thumbsup: I don't leave ANYTHING outside, though I do leave the keys in everything. I figure if they want it bad enough, they'll have it anyway and I mind as well allow them to do a little less damage.

The idea behind a common key stems from farmers. Do you realize how annoying it would be if you had mulitple tractors of the same model and brand and each one had a different key? They would be more inclined to leave the key in the ignition in that situation where as a common key means they just need to have one key in their pocket and can start any tractor from that brand. It is more convienient. Yeah, there are down sides but theft isn't a huge issue to my knowledge around this area.

Its the same way with every peice of heavy equipment. I have a key ring for work with cat, komatsu, samsung, john deere, etc, etc. Everything is keyed alike. I dont know about today, but when my family was in the trash bussiness, All the mack truck and peterbilt keys were all keyed alike as well. This was in the 80's and most of our trucks were all late 70 and early 80 models. If you had one MAck truck key, You had the key to every mack truck that rolled off the assembly line. Just way it was and may still be. i dont knoiw

Don't know about JD, but my Kubota came with two. Every car I've ever bought came with two sets, seems pretty standard.

All the state's plow trucks are that way. Sterling fits Sterling, Transtar fits Transtar etc. Way easier for fleet purposes than keeping track of individual keys for every truck.
