Gladehound, I agree with what you're saying about Tractor House being asking prices, not actual selling prices, but it's a good enough indication that the asking prices are significantly higher than the quotes Axlehub and I were given on the same tractor. It would then take significant negotiating to get the prices lowered to the original sales price.

In your example, your machine is still too new for this full effect in my opinion and they are still asking 2k more than you paid for yours on tractor house and as you pointed out, your machine could be worth even more. Give it about 3 more years or so and you'll probably easily get to your investment or more (unless you trash it and put on 2,000 hrs per year of course). You see my point. Tractors don't depreciate like cars do. They are very different. That's the simple way to say it.

Nikko, yes, you want to stay below the Tier 4 stuff. My recommendation to you based on your desired tasks and size of land would be SCUT. My compact was too heavy to use often times enough on my 3+acre yard. It would easily leave ruts unless at least 3 days or more after a rain. Yes, it could lift more and do other things faster, but was not as maneuverable or desireable for yard maintenance and less practical for that application in my opinion. My SCUT is very nicely sized for this size parcel. These are my opinions only. Others will disagree. If I was a loaded millionaire, I'd have both even though I'd still use the Sub more often than the Compact and would probably park the Compact at my other property which is larger and has more "big" chores to do. With you not even having practical experience on tractors, you don't even realize yet how powerful of a machine a SCUT is. It is nothing at all like a lawn mower. It is a real tractor, in a small frame.

Just to avoid confusion, Tier 4 Interim is OK (most machines have been that since 2008). It's Tier 4 "Final" that adds complexity in machines over 26HP.

Neither is enough value to temp me. ;) Your tractor could literally fit in my snow bucket yet it cost 75% as much to buy! I'm just being factual here. Hopefully I'm not getting into that insulting territory yet.

I don't know that "literally" applies . . but it paints a picture ;-)

You wrote: "Please don't assume you know what I pick up on. I've only made a few points in this thread and I've let many of your statements go because they aren't worth my time."

Lol . . good debate is with passion but not emotion. Sometimes good debate effort requires the other side to "show their hand" a bit. Many readers may not have recognized the "aw shucks" wasn't real. So I thought a little razzle dazzle might cause that to be dropped temporarily to show how sophisticated your debate training actually is.

You aren't crossing any lines with me Glade . . just dropping some of the "acting side" of things :)

I don't think of debate as a good thing or a bad thing . . Its a teaching snd learning thing. But for some . . "winning" is the thing and that's never been my focus so it also typically isn't my weakness :)

What is/was your profession?

I'll go first . . I like people . . so I've worked in lots of efforts where getting people to be positive and motivated is the key . . Using technical skills to have non-geeks actually use computers in complex ways of sales and creativity. Teaching sales and marketing peole to actually sell instead of manipulate. Getting people smarter than they actually thought they were. I focus on appreciation rather than depreciation.

So how about you Glade? Where do all those debating skills and ability come from? (I think the "aw shucks" pretense is pretty much exhausted by now in readets eyes).

For the 26+hp tractors, what year did they go to Tier IV? I know the 2013's were still Tier III or "interim Tier IV" which have none of the fancy emissions stuff. I think most 2015's are Tier IV with DPF etc.

If the OP does decide to go 26+ hp, Tier IV is even more reason to buy used rather than new. I'm not a fan of more maintenance and more expense.

Do these machines have to be inspected? I understand for emission, but who is regulating all this the epa? how long does a dpf filter last?

In PA there are no inspections for tractors and no emissions checks either. For the emissions, the manufacturer has to meet the requirements to sell the machine, but once bought there are no emissions tests. However, it is illegal to tamper with any component in the emissions system. I would think NY would be the same way.

Nikko,

Currently there are a number of still new tractors that are tier 3 . . I believe Kubota bx Products still fall under that category. But my personal view is . . if tier 4 new technology is available yet doesn't cost more in initial cost or maintenance . . then I'd rather have the air cleaner and a known performance vs. what some manufacturers might move to with unknown issues or problems.

I know Yanmars221 and 324 are tier 4 and Masseys gc1700 series are tier 4 as well as Mahindra new scuts . . don't know about john deere or new holland /LS and last I knew kubota bx was all tier 3.

I believe you are correct with the 26 hp and above category. This also surprised me that it seems to be modelchanges that influence the year changes. As an example because the bx line stayed in the bx27xx series and didn't make changes ti the actual engine . . They were able to di 2015 models still under the tier 3 designation.

Its strange how the epa process works. I understand the dpf and egr issues on the bigger tractors are quite an usdue as my semi driver friends can attest to.

last I knew kubota bx was all tier 3.

They have been Tier 4 Interim since about 2008. They were Tier 2 in the years prior to that. There was never a Tier 3 in that HP range (Tier 3 was for 75HP and over).

A mindra dealer told me the their max 24 doesnt have a dpf filter. Which stated is a more friendly maintenace machine.

My L3800 was interim Tier IV. The L3901 is the final Tier 4 version of the exact same tractor. Price went up with more emissions stuff. It also will periodically need regeneration cycles. May be a hassle for some and not others. I don't know to what extent it may hold hostage.

I have a truck driver friend with a new truck. He says he has to pull over to the shoulder on the Interstate to let his cycle run and it is a pain in the tail and runs very hot while doing so. If he doesn't comply in a certain time period, the truck will basically override him. The way he explained it sounded like Engine FailSafe mode in my F-150, which in my opinion is dangerous.
