Thanks, Andy, for the information and Woodland Farms for starting the thread. I've used orings for decades and only today I'm learning that they come in different hardness ratings.
I'm reminded of the time back in the late sixties aboard a submarine. It was customary to send new and naive shipmates after the impossible (left-handed crescent wrench for example). Someone sent the new guy after an "o-ring splicing kit".
A few hours later he returned to the watch station with one.
We'd never known that there's a big oring that goes around the main driveshaft in nuclear subs, and it has to be spliced together when installed. The joke was on us.
Now I realize we should have sent those kids after a durometer gauge!
