O ring Madness

Thanks, Andy, for the information and Woodland Farms for starting the thread. I've used orings for decades and only today I'm learning that they come in different hardness ratings.

I'm reminded of the time back in the late sixties aboard a submarine. It was customary to send new and naive shipmates after the impossible (left-handed crescent wrench for example). Someone sent the new guy after an "o-ring splicing kit".

A few hours later he returned to the watch station with one.

We'd never known that there's a big oring that goes around the main driveshaft in nuclear subs, and it has to be spliced together when installed. The joke was on us.

Now I realize we should have sent those kids after a durometer gauge!

I read Phils reply and I thought about it and I did a search !!
Get your O ring splicing kits here !!
Great one Phil
:)

I have that exact kit. It does both metric and standard o-rings. I used it once for a customer, got him out of a big jam. Making nlarge o-rings is pretty easy, it's when you get into the smaller ones that can be a real pain.

Fitting o-rings are generally 70 durometer, the hardness in your general kit. Flange o-rings are harder, 90 durometer. I didn't mean to put a scare into anybody about their o-rings. Go ahead and keep using your kits like you always have. Just be aware that if you have installed a new o-ring and you still have a leak, that maybe you need a slightly different o-ring.
Flat face fittings that use an 0-ring are a different size than you find in most generic kits. They tend to be smaller diameter. Using one too thick will probably result in a leak. I hope this clears things up. Don't worry about what you have always done that works. Worry about it if it doesn't work.

Durometer

Did anyone know this word has been around since 1920. I had never heard or used this word before the other day. Anyway, below is a definition of Durometer. I don't think most of us need be concerned with the hardness of the three things listed below. I am concerned when you take an o-ring off, and it is flat ,hard or brittle. I know it is supposed to deform to seal, and dependent on the fluid used and the heat, I would recommend that if you take something apart with o-rings, to go ahead and replace with new o-rings while it is apart.

Durometer is one of several ways to indicate the hardness of a material, defined as the material's resistance to permanent indentation. It is named for instrument maker Albert F. Shore, who developed a measurement device called a durometer in the B9200. The term durometer is often used to refer to the measurement, as well as the instrument itself. Durometer is typically used as a measure of hardness in polymers, elastomers and rubbers.[1]

The size and type of material is listed in McMaster Carr search for Orings
(unfortunally the URL for each page dosen't come up)

McMaster-Carr

they have the gauges and sizes dimensions.

here is a pdf of the dimensions

they have a lot of information on there pages

So, I talked to Terry today about getting O-rings for the Tram pump. He said just go to the hardware store and get them. I said what kind. He said size 10 or 12. I said what kind. There was silence on the phone and then he said "O rings". A little knowledge is very, very dangerous

Terry is a great man. Impressive and very kind Do not take any of this as an attack on him. He has done me numerous favors and has always been there to answer my questions.

So, Wednesday I will go to Napa and get me some o=rings. Then I will send my old ones to Wayne County with a SASE...

I think you got the correct advise from Terry. If you called the pump manufacturer, you would probably get the same advise. This ain't the space shuttle.

Carl,

Did you ask the parts guy for the o-ring set for your tram pump. That seems like an odd response from Terry. That sounds like someone evading.

I ask the parts guy about the O-rings, and he asked me which tram pump I had. I didn't know which model, so he emailed a parts breakdown for both pumps.

Terry is the Service manager. Kieth is the parts guy.
