We eat old fashioned oats every morning. I take about a cup of frozen blue berries and guess at about 1 1/2 cups solid, frozen strawberries and put them in the fridge every night and in the morning add 2 good sized bananas. Then I blend it all together with an immersion blender. and just pour a third on each bowl. My wife adds cinnamon and nuts to hers.
Every once and a while we will use applesauce or blended peaches. If you really want good oatmeal lightly brown the oatmeal in the bottom of the dry pan before you add water. For other Ideas look up porridge recipes on line. The people over in the British Isles take their porridge seriously. At leas it seems that way to me. Ed

I have oatmeal everyday. I buy oatmeal, flax seeds, and red mill has a 10 grain and 5 grain hot breakfast. I will also mix in some pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and or raisins. I also will mix in musel, which has a lot of the same and apples. I do not use the same ratio twice it keeps it fresh. I also use a bit of raw sugar on top microwave it for 1 min, and its done. I have been eating it for a few years now and I look forward to it. On saturday/sunday we will do pancakes etc but during the week its all that oatmeal mix.

Almost the same thing for me. I use the multi grain oatmeal. Cook it in the microwave with raison and slivered, blanched (no salt) almonds. Service it with some Splendia (no milk or butter) and I am good to go.

I used to work with a guy years ago who started eating oatmeal with cinnamon for breakfast to lower his cholesterol. He said it worked.

The Good Eat cooking show from years ago had a program on oatmeal that might be of interest. He used a crock pot to make the oat meal so it would be ready to eat in the morning. When I used to eat oat meal I would do what the other posters have suggested, add nuts, honey, sugar, fresh fruit, or dried fruit. Anything to make it a bit different. Never did use butter though I would add milk when I was a kid.

Later,
Dan

I like to make large batches of granola cereal and eat it most mornings. oats, honey, oil, barley, raisins, cranberries, sunflower seeds, coconut, chia seeds...

For lowering cholesteral, I recently heard about pu-erh tea. I'm interested to see how my numbers change in a few months...

I would think variety of fruit and some nuts like almond. Try different stuff on different days to keep it interesting.

Thanks guys, good to know I'm not alone, some great suggestions as always.

Hopefully some diet mods will help with the cholesterol, trying to avoid meds if possible, fathers side has a history of heart problems, want to avoid that. Doc wants me to try to drop about 20 lbs. I'm about 6' 2" and 255 lbs, probably could use to lose some weight, have a bit of a belly, had to move up to 40" waist from 38's. As I get older my winter weight isn't going away like it used to and I'm pretty active.

Oatmeal will never be as exciting as bacon, eggs, home fries and sausage or biscuits and gravy, have to do what you have to do.

If you like cranberries, try pomegranate some time. I mix some of that into oatmeal on occasion as well. Good stuff. Pomegranate is a super food, and excellent for heart health.

Summertime I do oatmeal and frozen strawberries with apple juice. The strawberries are a little too sweet for me tho.
I tried blueberries and they aren't bad.

REAL maple syrup, or old fashioned sorghum molasses. Can't be beat for taste. And, probably oatmeal cookies won't kill you...

The only way I serve wet oatmeal is to someone else. :irked: Now if oatmeal cookies or oatmeal cream patties are a substitute, I'm all in. :)

I have oats every morning.

Ann and Jane Esselstyn have an excellent cookbook called Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease Cookbook I have had this recipe several times -very good.

Savory Smoky Oats

1/2 cup steel-cut oats
1/2 cup dried ****ake mushrooms
3 tablespoons nutritional yeast
1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
7 oz diced tomatoes
1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1 cup spinach
black pepper
hot sauce (sriracha)

In saucepan, combine the oats mushrooms, nutritional yeast, turmeric, tomatoes, liquid smoke garlic powder, onion powder, and 1 1/2 cups water. Bring the mixture to a boil. storing to prevent scorching. When the mixture just comes to a bowl, reduce the heat to maintain a simmer and cook for ten minutes until creamy.
Add spinach and pepper and hot sauce to taste.
__________
Most of the time I have old fashion oats with water in a bowl. microwave for 1 minute and 40 seconds, add two tablespoons of ground flax seed and a half cup of blueberries.
__________
Sometimes when I have a sweet tooth I blend in my bullet blender 1/2 cup water with five dates and teaspoon of cinnamon to add to the oats along with a handful of raisins and blueberries and ground flaxseed mixed in.

_____________

Someone say oatmeal cookies! My speciality. In my bullet blender I blend dates, water to a consistency of a milkshake this is my base.

I add cinnamon and vanilla to make cinnamon raisin oatmeal cookies. To the date base I add enough old fashion oats to a play dough consistency. Bake at 350˚ for 30 minutes.

Note I don't measure anything and they always come out good.

A variant to this recepie is the date base with pineapple and coconut add oats and you have oatmeal pina-colada cookies.

Another variant is to the date paste base add powdered coco to make chocolate oatmeal cookies.

Got the base just make your favorite cookie.

While we are talking chocolate I made some heart healthy chocolate ice-cream tonight-
5 dates
3 Tbsp Dark cocoa powder
3/4 cup frozen cherries
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 Tbsp unsweetened almond milk (or make your own a few almonds and water blended)
Unbelievably good - I got this recipe from Dr Greger.

I like to eat the old-fashioned style oats right out of the box. Makes a great snack.

When cooking, I prefer not getting it too mushy. Oats in a bowl, a few ounces of hot water, add a handful of walnuts, a spoonful of sugar, stir 30 seconds ... done.

When you buy the packets they have sugar, or when you add sugar you are defeating the purpose of a meal to lowering total cholesterol because sugar will raise your
triglyceride level. Remember total cholesterol = LDL+HDL+1/5 triglycerides. Whenever adding sweetness, do whole food sweetness to get the most/total nutrition like fruit, dates, etc. The cardiologists that have had success with diet to control heart disease are the ones that prescribe a whole food plant based diet with no added oils.

Oatmeal is already 6% fat so be very carful on adding nuts. Optimum benefit, instead of nuts, add ground flaxseed meal.

"Flaxseed meal contains omega-3 essential fatty acids, lignans and fiber. Omega-3 essential fatty acids are “good” fats that have been shown to have heart-healthy effects. Each tablespoon of ground flaxseed contains about 1.8 grams of plant omega-3s. Lignans have both plant estrogen and antioxidant qualities. Flaxseed contains 75 to 80 times more lignans than other plant foods. Flaxseed Meal is high in dietary fiber containing both the soluble and insoluble types. It’s also a powerful natural cholesterol controller"

Whole flax seeds are hard to digest, ground flaxseed is better but optimum is freshly ground flaxseed that is refrigerated. I use my little bullet blender and put whole flaxseed in it and make a batch weekly.

Kiotikowboy, I'm not picking on you:D Oatmeal and sugar and a handful of nuts is a better breakfast than eggs and bacon any day. I'm just looking for the optimum.

No problem. No disagreement.

Once upon a time, my oatmeal was about 1/2 oatmeal and 1/2 sugar - LOL. These days, I try to reach a happy place, where the meal is a bit healthier without sacrificing the enjoyment.

Quaker Original I make 1 cup oats to 1 1/4 cup water in mirical wave " micro" for 2 to 2 1/2 minutes when done I add 1/2 cup craisan or raisins craisans are cranberry raisans about 6 days a week.

I too had colesterol of 218 last year just last week it was 188 so it works to lower the number your total should've below 200. I was eating three egg breakfast before switching to oats. I miss the eggs every day but am healthier eating once a week. My .02 cents
