This is just second hand info, and I have no real understanding of the issues, unlike some posters, but a couple of years ago, when getting our home heating oil tank filled, I asked the driver to fill up my 5 gal. tractor can, and inquired if he thought it was the same as the undyed road fuel... he replied that both fuels came out of the same tank an the fuel depot/ distributor (where about all the local oil companies got their fuels) and that he added the red dye to each load, as required. This is in the metropolitan Baltimore area, so a lot of diesel was being consumed. Since we are forced to use "clean" gas, and non-ethanol is hard to get unless you travel to the less congested areas, I assume that our diesel would be ULS as well.
So....
1. Other than the red "off-road" dye, is there any difference in the #2 diesel you buy at the pump versus the #2 fuel oil (heating oil) you have delivered to your furnace tank?
That is: Do they ad a lube agent and/ or cetane booster to diesel but not heating oil? I assume they're the same other than the dye.
2. When someone has fuel oil (heating oil) delivered, do they give you a different product if your tank is in the basement, versus if your tank is outside? Or will you automatically receive a #1 & #2 blend that wont gel (freeze)? Or do they just assume your tank is in warm basement?
The off road diesel I buy for my lawn mower and farm tractor is specifically billed as "High Sulfer Diesel". I buy it in town at Corrigan's home office. Green tank, red fuel.
I contacted my local fuel distributer about the diesel fuel and hope I get a response. They sell OTR and off road diesel and NO ethanol gasoline at the local location.
