Off Road Diesel Price

I was not aware you had to have a tax exemption of any kind to buy off road fuel. It is dyed red so DOT knows it was not taxed as on road tax and will fined you if they catch that. How the fuel is use is what determines if off road is legal. It has to be used "off of government roads". May be a better definition. I was not aware sales tax was charged on such fuels either. Does that vary from state to state? Years ago I bought on road fuel and file for road tax refund which some say works out better.

The red dye exempts the road tax. In FL you still have to pay sales tax unless you own bonified agricultural property and can attest the fuel will only be used for that purpose. There is a form you are supposed to fill out for the sales tax exemption.

You don't pay road tax but you still have to pay sales tax unless you are exempt from sales taxes. Using it for agricultural purposes will exempt you from SC sales tax also, but I think you have to actually be farming for profit and not just a hobby farmer. Same deal as being exempt from sales tax on a tractor. Buying at the pump you're paying sales tax but I think you can file for a refund if you're exempt. I think you can also file for a refund for the road tax for any gasoline you use off-road.

Our local used to be 40 cents below road diesel because that's the Texas road tax....no sales tax on motor fuel in TX. Course he had competition then. Now that they closed, he upped his price and is only 20 cents below road diesel.

What is off road diesel costing delivered in your area? I get a little over 100 gallons per load. Last time it cost me right about what highway diesel would cost at the pump after sales tax. I can live with that for a delivered price but they are quoting me $2.45 plus 7.5% sales tax for my next delivery scheduled for tomorrow. That will come to $2.63 per gallon. Looking online it looks like road diesel is about $2.30 to $2.40 at the pumps.

It seems like I was seeing prices of $2.29 or so last week. I'm thinking they are raising prices with the tropical storm brewing in the gulf. That would be illegal after a state of emergency was declared which hasn't happened yet.

On deliveries, you need to buy enough to pay the truck and driver for the trip. Same with LP home/farm deliveries.

Off Road a week ago was 2.29 and regular diesel was 2.39 at the same place. They are screwing the off road users.

Around here, off-road always lags any price changes by several weeks due to less usage. Price is set by what the station paid. Price stays the same until the next refill. There may be three or four refills of the road/taxed diesel in the same timeframe.

The lag may be part of the issue, but with less turnover the station is probably charging more markup.
