Offset disc

they work on same principle at a bottom plow turning dirt one direction , They are very heavy and most of the time are only used for fire lines or new ground , rarely do you see them in any kind of ag application unless its converting pasture ground to row crop.

Offset Disc Harrows are Primary Tillage Implements. The heavy, heavy pans are set at a very aggressive angle, which means draft force is high, so frames have to be really strong. If tractor has enough traction Offset Discs can cut and turn sod the width of a tractor.

why are you wanting an offset what are you doing with it??

I plant winter rhye for my cows in the fall and usually follow up with millet in the spring/early summer and after the cows have walked and packed it down tight my 10' Bush Hog leveling harrow has a tough time tearing the ground back up to get it in good enough condition for me to plant it back, I have borrowed an offset and it will get the ground in good enough shape that I can make one pass with it and wait a couple of weeks and run back over it with my leveling harrow and it's smooth and ready to plant rhye or millet. If you try to get the ground ready with multiple passes with the leveling harrow it just seems to roll up in sheets and make a mess.

just a suggestion but finding a good used chisel plow would be a lot cheaper and will loosen the soil enough for the harrow to work .

I have an old Athens. Its a beast, works great. But you need plenty of power. My 70 horse Kubota has all it wants when pulling it.

Way back when I was on the farm, we got an offset disc to replace a chisel plow and a tandem disc. We used to chisel the wheat stubble after the wheat harvest and then, after the soil had dried out after chiseling, we would run a tandem disc over it to smooth it out.

When we got the offset disc, it would turn the soil over and it left the field smooth enough that we didn't need to run the tandem disc on it. We might run a "sand fighter" or rotary hoe over it to bust up any dirt clods, but those things could be run a very high speed and didn't require a lot of hours in the field. So the offset disc was a great thing for us.

I've seen a set of Brown offset disks in action. Impressive. They need the horse power to be effective but will do a fantastic job on virgin land.

Throwing out alternative ideas:

1. What is the pan diameter and pan spacing on your "leveling harrow"?

2. Have you experimented with adjusting the front and rear gang angles, individually, on your "leveling harrow"?

3. Are the pans on your "leveling harrow" notched or smooth?

I wonder if an easily adjustable Tandem Disc Harrow with 22" or 24" diameter pans and 9" pan spacing (or 9" spacing nearest the tractor and 7-1/2" spacing in the rear gang, as offered by Monroe Tufline.) might not satisfy your needs and allow you to maintain and store just one implement. These Tandem Disc harrows are 1,600 pounds to 2,700 pounds in weight. Cutting in crop stubble is a SECONDARY tillage action. A correctly selected Tandem Disc Harrow should do it.

Perhaps you need pan scrapers.....

It is pretty clear following Disc Harrow posts on T-B-N that many, perhaps most, Tandem Disc Harrow owners set both gangs at the most aggressive angles when the Disc Harrow is delivered and never experiment with adjusting the gangs.

I have a Monroe Tuline 9"~7-1/2" spaced Disc Harrow. It has the adjustment holes in the gang lever and is quite fast to adjust; just one pin to remove to adjust the front gang and an identical pin to remove to adjust the rear gang.

I have the business phone number for Zack Frachiseur, Tufline's SE Field Rep. As Tufline makes both well regarded Tandem and Offset Disc Harrows he would be good for you to speak to. Let me know. I will send you Zacks phone number via Private Message. Zack is a Disc/Offset Harrow pro.

That is a very nice disc.
Guessing about 150 lbs. per blade that is what the OP needs. That would be a good size for the JD 5093E.

You describe it as an "old Athens" well a box tube disc frame really is not an old design. I may be getting old but I don't consider your disc to be old.:)

No, it's a disk with wheels that isn't an old design.

Nor is use of an hydraulic remote.

Neither had been invented, or at least wasn't seen in my neighborhood, when we used these things on the farm where I grew up. :)
