Pushing 80, been driving since 14. On freeways, your choice of speed is yours to make. On two lane roads however one should determine what the "flow speed" is and use that - it will usually be a bit more than the posted. Reason, on two lane roads in moderate to heavy traffic it is hard to pass, going slower than what everyone else is doing is creating a road block. Cops usually allow bout 10% over the posted.

I have driven in 49 of hte 50 states, Germany, Turkey, Canada and Japan. Collected 3 tickets total in all that time, two of them in speed traps. One in Georgia where every out of state car was stopped, the other in Germany - passing a bicylist in a no passign zone, bicyclist turned around and repeated his run whil the cop was writing my ticket. The third was head up a dark place.

Retired for six months but been driving slower (speed limit +/-10%) for the last ten years. As I watch those go around me and jockey for position at the next red light, I am glad it's them and not me. I don't need the higher blood pressure nor the ulcers. I do seem to notice that it is women, driving their SUV's, who are in the biggest hurry and have the worst driving manners. :stirthepot:

Decided to slow down a few years ago. Noticed that I got to work ( up to a 1 1/2 hr each way) more relaxed and was less tired when I got home. Never had a speeding ticket, can't say I have never deserved one, ok a bunch, but I enjoy the trip more when I slow down and let the other folks hurry along in front.

I'm like Ron when it comes to the motorhome. I run 60 mph because it is less stress than trying to pass frquently, engine is running at it's best torque curve, the RV seems to ride better and sway less at lower speed, and big plus is fuel cost. On a 1000 mile trip, our house to San Antonio, traveling 60 mph vs. 70 mph amounts to 2.5 hr longer trip, but @ $3.50 p/gl gas 60 mph saves $170. Taking those extra 2.5 hrs to get there pay me $68/hr for that little extra time.

At 69 I'm starting to drive a little slower, but still usually 5 over the limit. Used to drive closer to 10 over. More watchful about conditions--wet roads, night driving and especially don't like driving in the rain at night. Last & only speeding ticket was in 1965. Last accident was about 10 years ago when a motorcyclist in France tried to pass me on the right as I was turning into a parking spot. Had a couple other fender benders since I started driving in 1959, none related to speed.

I'm officially a geezer now since I ran 1/2 mile with my blinker on a couple years ago.

Pet peeves: 1. Inconsiderate jerks who pull out in front of you from a side road and poke along getting up to 55 in about 5 minutes, making you hit the brakes to avoid rear ending them. 2. People who drive in dim conditions without lights on. Especially folks in gray or silver cars in heavy rain where the spray makes them hard to see. 3. People who speed up when you pass. Often they are asleep at the wheel, driving at 45 in a 55, then wake up when you pass.

I 'go with the flow', i.e., whatever the traffic is doing in my area and stay well back, at least 4 seconds on any 2-lane roads. Control speed with my left thumb for the CC. It is the most relaxed speed to cruise as i'm not creating a road block or trying to pass, just rolling along enjoying th drive. Usually gets me there in about the same time as if I try to go faster anyhow. I won't pass unless the guy ahead is significantly slower than the prevailing.

I've been retired nearly seven years now, still set the "cruise control" on the speed limit, if the weather's fit. The main thing that causes me to drive slower is tail gaters!:mad::mad:

Speeders, do you really think you gain that much? Too many times I've had somebody pass me, then I pull up behind them 20 miles down the road! ~~ grnspot

IMO, this is hypocrisy....
If someone is "tailgating" ...it is YOU that is not getting the message...yet by slowing down (even more) you are imposing your own message...
Why would you attempt to anger another driver because YOU think YOU know better?...it's drivers like YOU that induce "road rage"...and one day you may not like the outcome of trying to dictate what YOU consider an appropriate speed.

IMO, life is too short to make someone "mad::mad::mad:" at you because YOU think everyone should drive the same speed as you...why not just pull over and avoid angering someone else?

Get the message and get over or you may end up getting more than just a message...!

Appropiate speed is speed limit. I do the same also because of no shoulders, I can't pull over to let them pass, I'm going speed limit, if an animal runs in front of me and I have to stop he will hit me from the rear, the only safe thing to do is decrease speed. If I'm going below speed limit, like when pulling a load, I will get over when I can safely. (I will also pull over if he has emergency flashers on.)

Pine, tailgating is both dangerous and illegal. When i pass by a cemetery I wonder how many have your mentality that you own the road and we all must drive dangerously. you will get the message one day when someone has had enough and slams their brakes to avoid a child and you seriously injure yourself or someone in front of you because you think you own the road. Road rage is a state of mind not induced by other drivers. It is not my or anyone else's fault you are angry because people won't get out of your way. Your message is clear. Bet you drive a big truck too.

I drive a big truck and love to slow down when suvs come up on me really fast weaving in and out of traffic. I know it is wrong but it's really fun. I guess I'm just a troll. :)

Apparently, you are one of those who don't "get it", most people do. If the driver ahead of you is driving the speed limit, back off & drive like you have a little sense!!!!

Three taps of the brake pedal, while mantaining speed will send the message to most people. ~~ grnspot

perhaps it is my fault that you misinterpreted my post...I never "tailgate", I don't advocate it and that was NOT the gist of my post....

deliberately slowing down because a car/truck comes up behind you is exactly the type of antic that causes road rage...actually slowing down only encourages a driver to take additional risks to pass someone impeding the flow of traffic...

IMO it is the driver that deliberately slows down that has the holier than thou "I own the road and you don't need to drive any faster" mentality...

roads are designed (curves, superelevations etc.) for nominal speeds usually significantly higher than posted limits...I generally drive at speeds that are "comfortable" for the roads and conditions usually 5 to 6 MPH over the posted limits when traffic/conditions allows.

Nothing was misinterpreted. you said "IMO" Your own words above proved my previous point. Bet you drive a big azz truck with a light bar on the front, jacked up illegally. You may one day live to regret those words above. Then again you may one day be a statistic because of that attitude. BTW their is a minimum speed and a maximum speed. You need to refresh yourself on local auto driving laws. Driving just below the posted speed limit is still way above the minimum. If will be you that get prosecuted by trying something stupid. Camera phones can make a case against a n aggressive driver.

A few years ago I built a "fabulous tailgate slimer" out of a windshield washer pump, a gallon milk jug some plastic tubing and a nozzle. When tailgaters would get one car length off my bumper, I would wash their windows for them.

It doesn't matter what speed I drive there seems to always be a tailgater. If you pay attention to traffic on freewayis or 2 lane, the average driver is much too close (tailgating) the person in front. That is the cause of all the multivehicle crashes, noone has time to stop before parking it in a trunk.

If you think you can intimidate a driver to go faster by tailgating you are seriously mistaken.

I, too, object to people who set cc at the speedlimit. Noone except them drives at that speed, the "flow" is always some faster and they become a road block.

I'm in front, I'm going the maximum speed allowed by law, I will be in the right lane if there is one, if not and you are tailgating me I will slow down, If you continue to tailgate me you you will be reported as a reckless possible drunk driver. The last one I reported was, and spent the night in jail. Make my day. (Note this is in a rural area.)

I'm only 31 yr old and I'm already that guy! My wife make fun of me all the te for driving so slow. I just smile and ask "what's the rush?"
God help me when I'm retired!

Now you've been WRONG three times...three swings, three time loser...you're out...!

If you're in front of me and you intentionally slow down (to impede the flow of traffic)...YOU (tag number etc.) have already been reported as a possible drunk (etc.) driver...I also have access to all available information about you from the DMV databases of whatever state your vehicle is registered...:D

/ OH NO #40
Wrong.
"...reduced speed is necessary for safe operation..." (because the drunk behind is tailgating which is against the law). Dmv Database? Are you suggesting harassment or threats, I would hope you would only use that info to sent me a thank you card for saving your's or another's life.
