Oil change question

Quick question for anyone that may know. My 2720 just crossed 65 hours and I am thinking it's time for my first oil change. I use fully synthetic 10W30oils in all my vehicles including my JD 318, however these are all gasoline engines I have had great results using Royal purple or Mobile one. Would it be a wise decision to go that way with this Diesel engine?

Next Question: Is there a Napa / Fram etc. equivalent oil filter That can be used? There are no JD dealers in the Virgin Islands so I am looking for an alternate route. A cross refrence number could help. Thanks in advance!

Can't answer the substitute question, as I would only go with Deere parts and oil.

No Deere dealer would be a problem, but how did you get a Deere there?

I'd have the filter, at least, shipped in before I'd install a sub.

Your 2720 calls for a M806419 JD oil filter. Wix crosses to a 51064. If you knock the '5' off that part number you have the NAPA filter number, 1064.

No suggestion on switching to full syn oils. I run dino and change as recommended.

Which Mobil One? There are several listed on the Mobil One website, including at least one specifically for diesel trucks. I would expect it to be very good in a tractor, but I'm no engineer, so my opinion is worth about what you paid for it.

The JD synthetic oil has gotten good review on the Bobistheoilguy website..

the last JD oil filters i bought were $8 each - I was using a Mobil 1 that was $12.. I would just go with the JD filter at that price.. Fram filters dont have a good reputation overall.

As far as Mobil 1 synthetic oils - Just makes sure it is for Diesels, they only have a could diesel oils - should have a CH, CJ or another C combination rating.. You need a diesel rated oil because of something that diesel engines produce (cant think of what the specific stuff it is right now)

I think the 2720 owner's manual specifies using Ch-4 or CI-4 oil.

I agree with Bird, I use Mobil one in my Toyota, and syn Delvac in my Bota.

I used a 10W30 fully synthetic Mobil 1 for over 22 years in my Toyota but have switched to Royal Purple since my son builds race cars and swears by the stuff. Those engines take a beating in heat etc. My GMC Sierra seem to love the stuff. The first Royal Purple oil change in that truck convinced me that running it 6000 miles was not a problem , so the second time I changed the oil the stuff came out almost as clear as it went in. That's enough for me.

I will look at the Manual for the specs and see if if I can find Mobil 1 for diesels. Thanks for all the input. Keep it coming!!

Hi,

Diesel oils have a different additive package than gasoline or LP engine oils. One difference is the total base number which is much higher in order to counteract the higher acidity levels present in a Diesel. Whatever oil you use make sure it's specifically a Diesel oil. (Also, you need to make sure that if your engine has flat tappets, your oil contains a zinc additive)

Personally I use Amsoil 15-40 Para-synthetic Diesel in my over the road Cummins and Amsoil 10-30 series 3000 Diesel in my Dodge/Cummins PU and my tractors.

For what it's worth the big Cummins has over 500K and the little one has just under 300K, both running Amsoil and no excess wear on the oil anaylsys reports.

The problem with Fram filters is there are at least three quality levels for each filter number. The cheap filters, poor quality go on sale, I do not like the concept.---Fuseboxer

I just recently started using the valvoline premium blue full synthetic 5w40 in some of my diesels. others are running motorcraft PSD 15w40.

will see what the UOA comes back on my 7.3 psd that I just changed over..

Ok, so you used "Slick 50" only because it was on sale? No opinions either way on the
stuff, but I guess that is why they run sales.
