Oil Disposal

big difference in clean bar oil and used waste engine oil loaded with good stuff like benzene and heavy metals.

and for the record.. dust control oil that municipalities put down on the road is not waste motor oil.

I do tend to get testy when i see posts like that... something about being a civil engineer that majored in water systems design and waste water management... I don't like drinking what came out of somebodies engine if I can help it. a drip off an oil plug is one thing... outright deliberate dumping is another..

ok.. off soapbox now... just making the statement so you know where I'm coming from with some of my comments concerning deliberate introduction of a hazardous waste product into the environment

ps for good midnight reading when you can't sleep, you can hit the epa website and see the prosecution listings of people caught dumping fuel and oil. one of my favorites was a landscaper who was using oil as a fence line grass control method. I think he's still in jail and won't have a dime to his name for a long time to come.

It's processed animal fat actually.,,, and glyphosate is a much better grass and weed control medium than motor oil. It's not slippery either.:D

I store all my oil in a 55 gallon drum. Then in the winter, I use it to heat my shop:thumbsup:

I have a 55gallon barrel stove to heat with wood. Mounted above and to the side, I have an old 30 gallon air tank that I fill with used oil. There is a steel line with a shut-off valve That I use as an oil drip.

And sometimes, I use it as an oil stream when getting the fire going or if I need a quick heat-up:thumbsup:

Kinda kills two birds with one stone: getting rid of waste oil, and free heat:thumbsup: Allthough I guess I cant really call it free now if companies pay 50cents/gallon for it:confused2: I was not aware they did that.

I've wondered about this. When I run my chainsaw I can go through 2 or 3 bar oil fillings in a given session. This is close to 1/2 quart. That must be going somewhere...

I use a chainsaw myself sometimes, but have never thought about that bar oil being flung off the chain myself...good point. I am sure a lot of what the chain throws will end up on the wood being cut though.

You are nothing but a big gov't liberal enviro weenie who wants to control every aspect of our lives from cradle to grave. (major sarc)

All serious aside, it's amazing the difference between the older generation and younger generation on these matters. My 80+ year old uncles still think nothing of draining say their lawn tractor oil right on the ground next to the barn while most younger people would cringe over this...but that is what they did growing up-that was the norm. Not saying all old people do this but there tends to be less environmental concerns with them.

Some attitudes toward the enviroment for example are now better in this world I guess...not everything is going to heck.

Ummm, I am 60 years old and have been changing my oil myself for over 40 years and have NEVER, repeat NEVER, dumped used or new oil on the ground unless by accident. Anybody who intentionally dumps oil on the ground is a LAZY MORON, pure and simple. Yes, that may insult and upset some people here, but it's my biased opinion.

Perhaps when I am 20 years older I won't give a (Bleep) about what I am doing to the environment either, because odds are it will not affect ME that much.

chances are the good stewardship skills you already posess would prevent you from even thinking about doing that.. even 20ys from now. :)
