oil filter cross reference?

I just cross referenced a proprietary filter at the local AutoZone and came up with a replacement. Upon examination, the replacement filter is identical in every respect except that it is a little over an inch shorter, or approximately 70% as big as the factory part. Is this a big deal?

BTW, the filter is for a 2003 model 4-stroke Mercury outboard. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

What model number/size Mercury Outboard?

You might try Wix Filters for a cross reference. They have Mercruiser Marine models listed.

Thanks for the link Docheb. I checked though, and there isn't one listed for a Mercury 2003 40 hp outboard model 40ELPTEFI. Just sterndrives and diesels it appears.
