Giant channel locks. Get a pair, and you'll use them for everything (including many things that you shouldn't)

Edit:
Darn...looks like RandyinTN beat me to the punch.

Big pipe wrench works wonders on a oil filter if you have room for it.

You need leverage, the longer the handle tool the better.

I bought a new mower, I could not believe how tight they installed that oil filter. I tried about everything I had and the only thing that worked was a 60 year old heavy 28 inch pipe wrench..

One of the problems I've frequently faced over the last 50 years of changing oil filters it that often there is absolutely NO room to the side for a long handle. I had one vehicle that unless you used something that went over the end of the oil filter and also used a socket extension you were not getting the filter off.

In one of those "10 best oil filter wrench" reviews 10 Best Oil Filter Wrenches for Cars, Trucks, SUVs in 219 all went over the endcap (or 1 WAS an oil filter). But most are to small for my 7.3 filter.

With the Innovant Adjustable 3 Jaw Oil Filter Wrench I can put a 6 inch extension on my socket wrench or even my impact hammer and get my filters off easy.

Tight filters only happen once at my house, after the first one I put them on correctly and never have an issue. Luckily the three machines I do own I have room to turn a long handle tool an inch at a time..

Locking Oil Filter Wrench

Harbor Freight to the rescue! :)

Seriously - what I used on mine after failing with the filter sockets, typical strap type filter wrench, and the 3-jaw adjustable. My filters were gorilla tight from factory and everything wanted to slip or crush, but not spin them. These from HF did the trick just fine. The chain type vise grips mentioned previously probably an excellent option as well.

I had luck with this one when removing the first filters. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000NPR33...filter+wrench&qid=1551356093&s=gateway&sr=8-5

I had also gone through a number of methods. You'll have to crush and deform the filter a bit while gripping tight with this wrench, but it worked.

I used this style to get the hydrostat filter off. It was actually so tight, the the outside of the filter started turning while the inside didn't move, so I had to use this style to grip the "cogs" on the front of the filter. Probably made for a spanner wrench, but I didn't have one.

They should really swap a couple employees around at the factory. The gorilla putting on the filters should be torquing the wheel lugnuts & the guy hand tightening lug nuts should be on filter duty :)

I just finished doing the 50 hr oil and filter change on my Mahindra eMax 22, the Innovant 3 jaw removal tool referenced in this thread came to the rescue. Some day when I feel adventurous I will do the hydraulics.

I've a movable 2 finger one bought at NAPA a long while back. The fingers move in and out on springs.
