Ok I have a Yanmar 2000 and was looking for oil filters. I noticed on Hoyes Tractor web site that it states

"Shop notes:
There is much more to a filter than thread size. We see a lot of customers come in with engine problems caused by the wrong filter. Did you know that one of the common filters that people are using has a filter material that is too fine & almost all of the oil bleeds through the bypass valve - NOT GETTING FILTERED AT ALL!!" Are they the only place with the "right" filters?

Anyone know what this "common filter" is that they are speaking of or any filters to NOT use? Also does anybody have the Wix oil/air filter number for a 2000?

Napa # 1064 is a wix

I thought that warning applied to screw-on hydraulic filters, (not used on YM2000) where the similar oil filter is not suitable.

If Amsoil doesn't make an EA filter for it (the true best, only needing to be changed every 25,000 miles or one year), then I only buy Wix. The best of the conventional filters.

No. That quote came off of their oil filter page

Hi Newt419,

I just received a 3 pack of oil filters from Hoye Tractor Parts. I am very pleased with them and will now only consider other brands in an emergency.

When using NAPA (WIX) Oil Filters I noticed a major problem that concerned me. With engine warmed up, and idled at low RPM's the Oil Warning light would light up. Now with the proper oil filter installed it does not light up at low RPM's. Meaning I still have safe Oil pressure at low RPM's when engine is warmed up.

Hope that helps you make a decision.

i have been using baldwin B-227 and sakura C-1032 and had good results from both.

I've used Wix for the entire time I've had my tractors and never had an issue. I change my oil and filter once a season.

I bought Hoyes filters myself. But i am just wondering these same tractors were sold in the US in the 80s and im sure that the filter manufactures speced a say Wix filter for them. Or is it one of those things that Wix just said it fit so use it?

My 3810 takes a Wix 51568 oil filter dont know what others take that but I imagine 336, 3110 do at least.

I have a bunch of Hoye filters to use up for now, but in the past I have found my YM240 (US version YM2000) listed among US tractors in the Napa, Autozone, Wix, or Baldwin oil filter listings. It's a common Japanese car filter, as I recall the same # as my Subaru.

Somebody who wants one should go look this up, and share with us what they learn.

Yea i know you can find the 240 listed in the filters at carquest and napa etc. I got my fuel filter there for the ym2000 this way. But if hoye is saying that the most common filter folks are useing is the wrong media etc. One would think this is that filter that folks are getting at Napa or carquest and all the crosses as thats the easiest thing to get "wix" which they both sell and makes the house brands. I wish we knew the most common filter he was referring to. I know he dosent want to slam a brand and also wants to sell filters so i cant blame him. I also dont think he is lying either. Hoyes filters are $20 for three thats pretty much the same price as carquest for me but the shipping makes them pricy if thats all you need. i try and put one order a year to Hoye and anticipate what i may need as far as maintence goes. The shipping is not bad if you figure they come to your house and you dont have to buy gas, but i dont make a special trip to the parts store either i pass within a mile of one on my way home so i just drop in.

i did the same when looking for filters for mine. apparently the b227 has a similar micron and valve rating compared to the OEMs and the sakura is similar to that again. should go a lookin around to see what i can find. my filter guy has a fair range of cross reference books for these with the spec's so i might just go see him.

yeah i agree BUT..... it needs to have a bypass valve in it, petrol(gas) engined filters dont have them.

The Wix or Napa filter sights list all the pertinent information about their filters. Thread size, relief settings, micron rating, etc, etc. I confess I use a filter not from a Yanmar parts dealer but almost feel a little guilty about it. I don't think the dealers are getting rich selling oil filters.

I agree not at the price hoye is selling them for. Especially considering he supposedly had them engineered and built for him. That im sure was a huge tens of thousands of $$ investment.

Like i said i buy carquest filters when i dont get the oil change special with a purorlator at Advanceauto. There cheaper line is in the $3.50 range and the higher quality for the toyota and the saturn i have is in the $6.oo range. So 3/$19.99 is right in line with the better filter i listed.

I don't care what Hoye or anyone says, if you've used a filter(s) without issue for a few years, then none of the rest matters. The oil you use is much more important.

I've never heard of an automotive filter not having a pressure bypass in it.. They all do.

I believe there are numerous auto filters without by passes. Here is an example. If you click on the oil filter it will show the specs.WIX Filters : Filter Look-Up
