. Most stuff even big equiptment uses silicone now.

i see many people spec'ing 'right stuff'// but not regular silly-cone.. etc.

Where the case bolts back to the tractor ??. It's like a paper thin gasket tthat goes there.. Maybe I'm misunderstanding which gasket he's talking about

i don't know specifically which gasket he refers to, nor do I have the spec drawings. thus my response said that if the gasket involved any bearing preload, I'd use the oem gasket.. etc.

i'm not a fan of gasket in a can, where an OEM 'gasket' is available.

I DO realize many manufacturers are actually spec'ing a gasket maker like 'right stuff' instead of a pre cut gasket.. but that stuff is worlds different thatn regular silly-come caulk / tube rtv.. etc..

'nuff said.. op needs to make some decisions vs our opinions..

According to John Deeres parts sight you need oil seal CH11227, o-ring T32587. If you go with the new spacer (sleeve) CH11236, and if you go with a new housing gasket LVU801615.

Winston has the specs right there for you even the spacer/sleeve!

Well my guess the seal rode on a bearing inner race looks right now unless the "sleeve" part near the bearing separates from it. I would buy the gasket if its available and be done.

I use either sealers or gaskets never both. In this case if everything was spotless clean automotive silicone would work fine.

Yes take scotchbrite or 320 sand paper and clean the sleeve get rid of all the rust. Pull the bearing and see if the water damaged it while you are at it time saved now will pay in the end!

Thanks for that info....I am having trouble finding those part numbers...Can you send or post that picture?

I dont mean like the door/window stuff in a big tube from lowes. Im talking one of the various colors of RTV. I always use the grey which i think is an import approved one for Toy and Honda? I use it cause i have had bad luck with blue and when i first started hanging around my father in laws shop thats what he used on pretty much everything so i do it myself now.

Im thinking CAT has thier own stuff that they use when removing things like final drives as far as other things like this. I know a lady who works with me her husband is a CAT mecanic and they rebuild JD's at home as a side hobby/biz. I think she said they use the CAT sealer on everything as he always uses it working on equiptment.

to me.. if it has an oem gasket.. i get it.

I've seen too many hyd applications that people used rtv and it failed because the correct paper thin paper gasket wasn't used.

doesn't take too many times of 8hr labor jobs to simply use the oem supplied 2$ gasket vs 2$ tube of goo, assuming there is a gasket.. if it's oo spec by the maker.. then go for it.

that's all i'm saying..

If there is a paper/fiber gasket, use that. I like to put GasGacinch sealer or Permatex gasket shellac on them. A lot easier to work with than going around that whole thing with RTV. Looks nicer when put back together, I think. Don't have red/grey/blue crap oozing out everwhere.

yep.. when i go look at a machine, or work on a machine and see a bead of rtv extruded around a flange.. i start wondering what / who has been in there, and if they didn't bother buying the correct 2$ gasket.. did they do anything else correctly? :)

besides.. so much fun razor blading off rtv to reseal it properly.. :)

again.. I know some applications actually spec a silicone sealer like 'right stuff' or similar oem brand.. etc. not talking about those applications.. but specifically applications where ther is a provided oem or after market gasket and it is not used vs a tube of make a gasket.. etc..

I am more a fan of gaskets myself like some others especially when they come out with them to start with. Normally if a formed in place gasket works thats what it will be when you tear it down. (as long as some hack hasn't been working on it)

We deal with small rigid housings in my world where an anaerobic or RTV silicone works but on bigger housings where there may be some shifting or flex its better to go with gasket. I dont know in this case if thats an issue or not better safe than sorry like soundguy says. fwtw
