Yea i like gaskets myself im just saying that you can use others, i usually use gasket and sealer myself. Not saying its right just what i tend to do. Not on a rubber gasket of course.

Yeah lots of folks do that I see it all the time and it does work. I use hi-tack to stick one side only when its going to be a problem assembling something before the gasket shifts etc or working upside down which is quite often.

This place is great - bunch of great advice. The gaskets are giving me fits to remove them. My problem is I am trying to spend as little $$$ to see if the engine runs and the pump is not shot.

The larger gasket alone is $40 and $8 and I need both sides...over $100 for just paper thin gasket....OUCH!

I talked to a JD Dealer and he said that is it wasn't acting as a shim then form a gasket would be fine....I also chatted with Hoye and he agreed too....So...Thats what I will do....hope I am not wrong!

Scotty, why did you not run the tractor with the leaky brakes? The brakes would have no effect on weather or not it would run? And there is no way id spend $100 on gaskets in your situation esp if im just going to sell it! Also i use razor blades just Like CD. I will break them down if i need a smaller one to get into a tight place. I had to break one of those pyramid shaped blades for the razor knifes just this last week when i tore down my stihl chainsaw. I left the crank case in the saw (really did not see an easy way not to) and could not even fit a razor blade whole in the tight spot so i had to break one into thirds. Oh the saw, i bought new from Stihl Dealer, cylinder was sealed to the crank case with red silicone from the factory, squeezed out and everything. I put it back togeather with trusty grey RTV.

The reason I didn't is that it was already empty of fluid and I realized at that time that it had water in it. So I figured I would drain and tackle this end first. It does turn over and the previous owner said he ran it only a few months ago.

Scotty , RVT,Etc, gasket maker will work just fine between the housing & tranny. I had a leak there several yrs ago & that's what I used. It hasn't leaked fluid since

Thats because rtv is a gaket maker itself. It fills the voids left by the imperfect metal fordging/grinding and seals them.

Scotty do like Ken says DO NOT spend $100 on fancy JD gaskets.

I used black rtv on mine and it has been fine. I removed everything down there and no leaks at all. I left the old gasket in place and used the sealant to seal the existing gasket.

Orthodox? No, but it seemed better than removing what was working fine before.
