Oil & Fuel Oil leak. I may have to split my TC24DA!

So I guess I'll keep monitoring the oil level. If I do have to split, then I'll wait till early spring as I need the tractor to plow snow, haul firewood, etc.

TCBOOMER had a couple of post about splitting his TC24DA. You still here?

Yep...so ask away and I'll do what I can to help. I have pix stored if you need them. I had to do the input seal on the hydro, so I didn't have to r&r the clutch and flywheel. IMO, it's a fairly easy job if you have the mechanical abilities and tools.

When I get a chance I'll take a look and see if the rear main seal is an external one piece design. If so...a piece of cake to replace most likely.

PM me or we can walk through it here. One suggestion I have is if your certain it's engine oil, add some dye before tear down and run it a bit. It just helps confirm the source. I can send you a small bottle if you need it. But you also need a black light to see the dye.

I agree with what others have said...if it's a minor leak, you might consider holding off til it gets worse. My hydro leak started small...the size of a quarter, but within about 6 hrs(had 10 on the clock), it increased dramatically. Left a mess about 2' diameter after plowing snow.

TCBoomer,

I have a complete service manual and I agree that it should be a simple job. It appears that the seal is one piece according to the service manual pics.

I did PM you with my email address asking for those pictures. I found your post about your project from a while back but the pics were gone. If I could see them in addition to my service manual it would be great!

I'll get some dye...I'm sure locally...autoparts, machine shop? I can get the blacklight, no problem.

I definately don't want the clutch to end up getting contaminated by oil! Im certain that it is engine oil as the level is slowly dropping and it is of the same consistency as engine oil. But, to be sure the dye route should be the way to go to begin with.

I mistakenly deleted all of them here awhile ago and couldn't figure out how to reinstall. But I still have them all on file. I'll try and get to it tonite.

Parts store should have the dye. If not let me know. The dye is a just cheap insurance to verify the source once it's split. While it would still be possible to run the engine while split to find the source of the leak, it would involve additional precautions to be taken. Along with the possibility that it could be somewhat hazardous for someone who has never done it.

Give me some time, but I'll definitely send the pix to you.

Thank you very much for the pictures. I had planned to get started but then the weather turned bad and I needed the tractor for plowing and hauling firewood. And then....the ball joints are going bad on the truck and both front seals are leaking too!

Maybe I should quit doing maintenance on things. It seems that people that run stuff into the ground.....thier stuff runs forever.

I don't know how similar your tractor is to my TC35A, but I would be interested in seeing the pictures of the tractor split. Can you post them?

Buck,

I have not done it yet but I confirmed the leak tonight with the black-light. The engine oil that I put dye in lit up like crazy. I'm in the process of sorting out issues with my truck...fixing it or looking for another one.

If it's okay with TCBoomer, I'll post pics of his split of his TC24DA?

I'm not sure of how similar it may be with your larger tractor? As crazy as it may sound, I'm kind of looking forward to this project!

Joe...your more than welcome to post those pics I sent U, but I just saw that your on your way to splitting yours. So it may not be necessary now. Looks like your doing a fine job so far.

edited to add...remember, the purpose for the dye is to pinpoint exactly where the leak is after the split and teardown. I'm sure U knew the diff between engine and hydro oil, so checking for the presence of dye in the fluid on the floor wasnt why i suggested using it...if I understood what U just said correctly

Using the dye prior to the split was a good decision. Adding some black clutch dust to clean hydraulic oil makes it sometimes look just like engine oil when it runs out of the clutch housing onto the floor. It really can be deceiving.
