Parts house only offered one size for main bearings.

On the back side of the bearing shells they will be stamped: STD or .010 or .020. The new bearings HAVE to match the old bearings. When you remove the old bearings post some pictures of both the wear side and the back sides if possible.

Measure the crankshaft journals with a micrometer (mic) to make sure they aren't worn, and aren't out of round. This will tell you if the crank needs to be ground undersize, and also tell you what size oversize bearings you will need, if at all.
When you run dirty oil, the babbitt or aluminum face will hold embedded particles up to the saturation point, then they start acting like emery cloth on the crankshaft journals and wearing starts.

Your local Napa (and others) parts store sells something called Plastigage.
