10w30 is hard to find in a diesel spec oil around here.

I suppose it could be sparse in some regions. I can easily find all the major players in 10w30 and have for several years... Delvac, Rotella, Delo, etc. I use Schaeffer diesel spec oil.

There are some smart people on this forum. The challenge is knowing who....

Oil is cheap and lasts a long time. I use the oil recommendation of the manufacturer. If I wanted to consolidate my supply, I would pick 3 or 4 of the most likely candidates, and send an inquiry to each manufacturer on which ones would be acceptable. Easy to decide once they respond.

Engines are too important to worry about saving a $1 per quart or two feet of shelf space.

Here's a link to AMSOIL. They carry three 10w30 diesel oils. This is a link to their Heavy Duty line. Sign up as a Preferred Account and shipping is free if order is over $100. Dutchy

AMSOIL Heavy-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil 1W-3

Amsoil is a very good oil, but my main issue is that their business structure makes it so the cost is higher than it should be, even with the preferred customer thing. There is a considerable down line that gets a cut of what the consumer is paying. And the drums of oil I go thru just for my diesels, the cost difference causes me to use another brand. The Schaeffer I use, I get it for almost store shelf pricing and they deliver it free to my front door. No "preferred customer" signup stuff needed like Amsoil and I get a 3% discount by paying by check. And when I put in an order with my local direct rep for Schaeffer, I get an email invoice and send it in with a check. My rep will throw in some oil sample kits occasionally which include free analysis. My order usually arrives even before the check has cleared. And Schaeffer has been making lubricating products longer than anyone in N. America... since 1839 and were recognized a few years ago as being in the top 500 most technologically advanced companies in America. I think they might have the lubrication thing down. My Detroit 60 12.7L now has 1,035,735 miles on it and is still all original (except for water pump) and only uses about 1 qt of oil every 11-12,000 miles. I have 40 used oil samples on it, with the latest showing no more wear metals than when the motor had 50,000 miles on it. And that is even with me going 50% longer than the OEM recommended change interval.

Oh... I am on the preferred customer thing with Amsoil. I do use a few niche products they have. I just leave my main oil and grease needs to Schaeffer.

No biggie. Select a HD oil with the C(?) for compression engine suitability, and the S(?) for spark engine suitability on the starburst on the container. Then select the viscosity that suits you and you are home free. 5w-40 Rot T6 (full synthetic) negates a lot of oops!
