Just read this thread, I too am looking for what the final outcome was?
I'm not gonna rag on VW or say you made a mistake and used VW cars are junk.
I certainly dont think this is even in the realm of a lemon. Yet.
It had some issues. The hole in the license plate isnt a mechanical issue at all. I wouldnt count that as a strike.
The tire wear.....thats subjective. Everyones opinion on tire wear is different and without seeing pictures....this could be something minor, or it could be in serious need of alignment. IT happens. Especially if the previous owner lived out in the sticks down some bumpy roads. No big deal.
Now the engine light is a big deal. New cars are are a pain. Sometimes just leaving the gas cap a little loose will trigger one, and would take another tankful or two to clear on its own. But not that anything is really wrong. I'd say that 90% of codes I have seen on my cars are emission realted. Something or another to do with the gas tank or evap circuit. The handful of times I have actually had something wrong with the car, I didnt need a code or MIL to figure it out.
But to answer the final question, I dont think the dealer owes you anything more, provided you get the car back and fixed to your satisfaction. Crap happens. YOU test drove the car and nothing was wrong other than a MIL light. Next day you drive it home and it wont go over 20MPH. There isnt any way for the dealer to "predict" if and when the car might break down. This was just dumb luck and bad timing. It certainly sounds like they are trying to make it right and giving you the free loaner and all.
If any additional warranty should be granted, it should only cover the initial problem IMO. IE: if this same thing happens in 3 month, they should cover it.
But lets say 3 months from now something totally unrelated goes wrong. Like a AC compressor goes out, or alternator quits charging, etc. IF the car was bought as is, that would be on you

I,ve been dealing with a check engine light on my wife's chevy cobalt.. The code was an evap code.. Leak in the evap system, bad, sensor ,etc, .
Well, I replaced a couple sensors, still got evap code. So, I just kept clearing the code..
my wife complains of a gas odor all the time. So, I check and can find no gas leaks
last week I get a recall letter in the mail from GM. The letter states something about a check engine light and a gasoline odor.
I take the car to the dealer wednsday , they check out the letter ,and the car.. They say they have to replace the gas tank, fuel pump, and all related parts with the gas tank, All under warranty
Engine lights can be something as simple as a sensor (as I thought it was on my wife's car) or something in depth as on my wife's car

I would have to think the outcome was all good and the op did not find the time to say that a dealer actually did the right thing and took care of the issue in a timely matter?

No I wanted to wait a few days of having the car back before giving a final update, cause I am sure we can all agree that just because the car actually makes it home from the dealership this time doesn't guarantee were good to go. So Wednesday we pick the car up after work, returned our loaner car with the gas gauged pegged on "E" which the finance didnt agree with us doing but I said "look at it like this, we shouldnt have had to have a loaner car to begin with". So we get home with her car, ran good, we were kind of exploring the ins and outs of it, open up the center console and there is a brand new pack of Newport Menthols (neither one of us smoke) we just laughed it off. I took the car to work and back the next day, about 70 miles in total. Ran fine, cruised down the highway like a dream. Fiance took it to her work and back yesterday and everything is fine thus far. Been zipping around town with it and everything functions as it should.
The only thing I questioned on it is that when the Dealer we bought the car from, took it to the actual VW dealer, the VW Dealer charged over 300 dollars to our dealer to fix the car. The car is still under factory warranty, why were they charged for it?? I mean, I dont really care its not like I had to pay for it but still makes me ponder....

The last time I needed a loaner, I had to sign a $0 agreement that said the vehicle had to be returned with the same amount of gas in it as when I got it. If I didn't they would fill it and charge my credit card. Congrats on saving another $25.

I read our loaner agreement too..it said the same thing but followed it with "if the vehicle is not returned with the same amount of fuel as it left with, the borrower would be charged $0.00 @ $0.00 per gallon to refill the tank of borrowed vehicle."

Could be that as the dealership is no longer the owner if the title has been transferred to you. If the fix is considered "electrical" as opposed to "emissions" could be another reason especially if the bumper to bumper expired. Since all of this computer and sensor crap relates to emissions, makes me think the former but warrantees can have a lot of hooks in them.
