Was running as test out. After about 3 minutes, it started to smell as if burning (rubbing) metal. Then started to smoke around the starter area. I killed it as soon as I saw the smoke. Checked the oil before running an it was ok level. There is evidence of the started being convinced to turn over, (witness marks on the outside). Now it ast as if the starter has gone out. Which is fine! I noticed threre are several yellow 'oil' caps in various locations. I am not sure which one is what or the drains and filters that correspond to each other. As I pulled it back to the garage (that wasn't fun) the rear axle was making a click-clicking sound. Any ideas??? Thanks guys. Any help would be appreciated.

How did you pull it back to the garage?

Did the manual tell you how to dis-engage the hydro tranny to pull it?

JD parts are pricey. That's a yanmar starter with a yanmar part # (I believe). If not, see below. Contact your local yanmar dealer for a cheaper sub.

You don't have to buy the entire starter... pieces and parts are available.

Here are the equalivent starter part #'s

Looking at the aft end of the tractor: on the right hand side, just outside the frame rail. There's a 1/4" dia. rod that comes back and hooks to nothing. The rod needs to be down for normal use, up for towing/pushing.

And NEVER park without setting the parking brake because it eventually WILL roll freely once the system bleeds down. I had a friend use and park mine once...

Look around for an automotive electrical repair shop. You can probably get it rebuilt a lot cheaper than buying a replacement and it'll be good as new.
It will save you a lot of aggravation and maybe damage to the tractor if you bite the bullet and get a manual. I'm as cheap as the next guy but you can fool around and cost yourself some money...
My wife used to be in the business and we have two 455's. One is all wheel steer with 54" deck and the other has the 60" deck. I'm pretty familiar with both, but still refer to the manuals for both the decks and the tractors. I just can't remember EVERYTHING.

JD Manuals

Note that there are two options for the 455 garden tractor, depending on your serial number.

You are a better man than I am if you pulled that 455 ten steps without dis-engaging the hyd transmission. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There is a lever (handle) on the right side under the seat between the frame and the right rear wheel that lifts up. That opens the hyd. line that allows the 455 to roll much more freely. Hopefully you will find a manual, and get a good fix on the starter. Remember, the value of your machine doesn't come from having cheap parts. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I know, but I don't want to invest alot at first if there are some deeper root prpblems and could cost a lot $$. I found a place that will rebuild my current started for $30 plus parts. While that is in the works - I bought all the filters. Now, for the manuels - I will go buy the big dealership and see if I can buy them there instead of ordering. I need to find out the procedures ion changing the fluids and how much fluid to put it. One person told me to change the oil about 3 times in a row with running the tractor about 1-3 hours in between. Any ideas on that? It has been a while since anything has been changed.
