Sounds good on the starter repair.
As far as oil, I'd take a good look at the oil you drain, and if it appears to flow from the engine drain okay, and is not sludge, I would proceed with a change of filter and oil, then do it again in 50 hours.
If it comes out as sludge, I would put new oil in but not change the filter. Then run a few hours and change the oil and the filter after that. I would expect that the filter would be plugged if there is sludge, and until some of the sludge gets flushed out the crankcase, that a new filter would not be beneficial. Do what feels good to you.

I seem to recall the service & parts manuals cost me $160.

Fluid qtys per manual are:
Engine oil 3 qts with filter
Hydro 7 qts with filter
Cooling system 3 qts
Fuel capacity 6.5 gal

What about the guys selling the CD on ebay. There are lots of them. Are they worth looking into. They title it 'Factory Service Manual'. Is this one of the things I am looking for?

I have been talking about him getting the Operator's Manual. The one that comes with the tractor when purchased.
From the questions asked, this man needs to learn the basics (oil filters, buttons, hydraulics, switches, deck adjustment, tire pressure, specifications, service schedule, etc) for the tractor, and what is what and where. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Suspect it is about $15, but I don't know.
