Well .. the weather in NY souther tier has been excellent for growing stuff.

The white and red mulberry trees in the backyard are literally, quite literally dripping with fruit. Those will become Mulberry ice cream this weekend.

This mulberry stuff, has an interesting effect on the local fauna. At 5pm, the wild turkey and broods make the first pass under the red tree. At 7:30 a red fox picked up where they left off. Then the wax wings and squirrels go at it for an hour. Finally, the white tailed does and fawns (9 total), o'possum, ground hogs and coon's call a truce and dine collectively after midnight.

Who needs Animal Planet? This tree is 4 feet off the back deck. Another redeeming factor, I have learned to identify scat from all these critters.

Oh, and my LX288 has purple rubber now too.

Lastly, unripened berrys and shoots are thought to have halucinogenic properties. So says the field guide.

Well, I only read that paragraph in the guide last week. HOWEVER

1. The berries are all ripe now for this year
2. It does start explaining a few intrapersonal things around my homestead.

I too did notice the pygmy goats getting a lil obnoxious after gorging on them a few weeks ago.

Hmmmmmm

Todd, these trees grow like weeds down here in the the Hudson Valley - both red and white (note that the white ones are pink and the red ones are deep purple).

Could save a ton on beer and other controlled substances. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

To date, we've made Mulberry Jam, Mullberry Ice Cream, Mullberry Syrup (great with seltzer or vodka or seltzer AND VODKA), Mullberry muffins. Even use em to dye raw sheep's and goat's wool. Makes a nice solid pink color it does.

Makes nice designs on the undeside of the mower deck too. Last week mowing under that tree - well there are some low hanging branches and a berry or two fell down the back of my shirt - unannounced to me.

Went into the house and passed a hall mirror and was amazed I didn't either hear or feel the bullet enter.

The CEO looked at me and said it was a sweaty foul smelling smashed up mullberry.

Wonder if the stain in my favorite mowing shirt is perm.
