My opinion is carry what you are comfortable carrying and will carry everyday...so it will be part of you and if ever needed you will have it and know where it is on your body and can react...I have a S&W 40 cal double stack 14+ 1 but it is a pain to carry concealed...so I usually carry either my 22 Mag Derringer or 38 cal. snubby... My way of thinking is I will not get involved in a war in my daily travels and the whole purpose of the weapon is to defend myself...If anyone has even heard the sound a 22Mag derringer makes...you would have to agree ...an assailant would run just from the sound ,even if he was not hit...:2cents: Bottom line...Bigger and more powerful is not always better in my humble opinion.

That's crazy! Why would you want to carry only going to/from hunting? What about when you need to be armed against bad parts of a city? Geez.

In SC you can carry concealed without permit while driving to and fro from hunting or fishing. Can't get out of vehicle unless you are doing one or the other.

Illinois was the last state in the nation to finally have some sort of conceal carry law.
It took for ever, but, it finally happened, thank God.
Today is the first day we can register on line for a carry permit=January6th.

Edit=This what I use in my .45s.

Those rounds are similar to mine, except mine have the plastic center to prevent clothes plugging & provide more reliable expansion.

I still think carrying whatever you are accurate with is best. If it is like pointing a finger, and loaded correctly, it is better than something you will flinch and miss with. I'll keep my .22, and know that I can hit the eye of a gnat with it. I did a lot of practice with .357 and .45. If I had time to set up and think about breathing, gently pulling the trigger, etc., I could be very accurate. In times of self defense, and adrenaline rush, I want something that is second nature, not something to think about. So, the .22, or even the .38 is best for me.

I've always wanted a little stubby stainless 22lr revolver. Something with rubber grips. Don't ask me why. For one, I guess I can shoot it very cheaply.

Back in the eighties, I remember reading how most people in the States are shot with a 22, AND most don't die right away but within 48 hours! If someone is deserving of me having to shoot them, I kind of like the idea of them having 48 hours to think about what they did!

Industrial, I know you live in Canada, and probably never will carry that revolver, and I certainly mean no disrespect, BUT, if you actually did carry, and actually had to use your revolver to shoot someone to defend you and yours, the last thing you would want the prosecution to know is you said something even remotely like what you just said.. You would be crucified and hung out to dry. Keep in mind we think we are anonymous on forums and that our words will never come back to hurt us, but it is not true. We are not anonymous, and our words are forever, and will be used to hurt us if it benefits someones agenda. I say this mostly for our USA brethren whom may actually say something similar in an open forum and may actually carry a gun. Gentlemen, please do not ever say anything even remotely like this. The only time you use your firearm is to stop an immediate threat to your life or the lives of others, and all your hostile action will stop the instant the threat stops. Again Industrial, I mean no disrespect to you.

farmgirl,

try the new Ruger LCP .380. It is getting rave reviews, a friend has one. Also the Bersa brand is very good. More punch, similar comfort.

Best regards,

Thanks, DeereMann! The next time I am thinking of adding a firearm, I'll look into it, and see how the reviews are holding up.

I have a .22 rifle for use on coyotes and skunks, etc. on the property. I only shoot the .22 and .38 handguns to stay proficient, as they would strictly be for self defense. I kind of like having ammo that can be used in both, the handgun and the rifle, but with the supply and prices of .22 anymore, it has lost the "glamour" in that department.

Carried a Beretta Model 418 .25ACP for while that was made in 1944 and brought back from Italy during WWII..Picked it up for $75.. Now they sale for over $300.. Nice little gun and beautiful to look at :) ('brass' colored alloy frame) Used mostly FMJ for more penetration.
