Shotguns are very useful for protection. My brother has had years of training with Frontsight out of Nevada. Their main training involves using the handgun to protect yourself while your trying to find the shotgun. I kid you not.

Im really not too worried about self defense where i live. I have carry permit...so does the wife. But were pretty isolated. Low crime rate (right now). But no harm in keeping up with the practice.

I told her if she's using it for defense load 4 turkey rounds and two slugs.

Reminds me of something my brother told me when he lived in Alaska and did a lot of flying in small airplanes. A "survival kit" is usually included in the gear you carry in the plane, and a shotgun is part of that kit. He said you always load it so the first couple of shots are small pellets and then the next ones are slugs. That way you're prepared to shoot snowshoe hares or birds to eat, but you're also properly loaded if a bear charges you. As he said, you have to wait for the bear to get close for the slugs to be effective, but the smaller rounds give you something to do while you're waiting for the bear to get close enough.

The shot keeps the bear entertained, but I bet the slugs come as a surprise:shocked: whoops!:D

OK, lemme see...

Funny...nope, terrible that those women were not educated how to hold and fire a shotgun. Thus, they were unnecessarily injured and likely now afraid to use the simplest and most effective self defence weapon available to them. Likely each situation was set up by a male and designed to embarrass, redicule and hold power over the woman.....rather than empower and educate them in proper firearm technique and confidence in self defence capability.

The slams at Bidden....cheap shots and misdirected...a properly sized shotgun in appropriate gauge and load for the body mass of the shooter is actually a great self defence weapon.

Refer to Newbury's post. He did the right thing educating his wife to shoot a shotgun.

Humm!! Not too many people have an "Automatic" weapon. Or did you mean "Semi Automatic"?? Not a lot muzzle rise there.
What kind of shot gun, single shot, double barrel, pump or Semi Auto???
What should it be loaded with, slugs, buck shot, bird shot or ??
What gauge shot gun 410, 16, 20, 12, or 10.

Good old Joe was always good for some stupid remark, even when he had prepared script. Just had to add something dumb.
If you watched the video of his remarks on shot guns, he said shoot it into the woods. & It needed to be double barrel.
Humm!! 2 Shots into the woods. That is going to stop some bad guy??

There are special bullets made that do not penetrate dry wall & such things. should that be one of your worries. Even old fashion "wad cutters" as in a flat nose, they do not carry very far.

Semi-Auto. And yes people with guns scare me until i've been around them awhile. People new to guns do stupid things because they don't know any better. Experienced people do stupid things because they think they know better.

I spent time in the USMC (1967-1975) saw lots of people doing stupid things with weapons. Sometimes to other people, sometimes to themselves. Fire Department/Paramedic and Hospital for nine years. More people doing stupid things with guns. Again, sometimes to other people sometimes to themselves.

The weapon, no matter what kind should be sized to the person. Proper training given for that weapon. As far as ammunition, I have never known anyone buying ammunition to not cause damage. They think they have to have the one that makes the most damage the quickest. Most newbys have to be told what fits their choice of gun. They have no clue.

Well, there is that fellow in Oregon who fired one warning shot with an AR15 when a burglar broke into his home. He's now facing criminal charges.
The alleged perp was (supposedly) attempting to break in ... seems possible given his prior history ...

Unfortunately, for the guy facing charges (aka "Porkchop") he decided to squeeze one off ... after the alleged perp had gone into retreat ...

I'm in Oregon and haven't heard of this. Maybe if he lived in an apartment complex and put a bullet through his neighbor's unit.
Well, interestingly enough, Porkchop does live in an apartment complex apparently ... which is where said incident occurred ...

If the burglar had stopped the bullet there wouldn't be a problem.
Oh ... I'm guessing if he had shot him in the back and the guy had died there would all kinds of problems ... for Porkchop ...

Even as it is, my guess is that he'll still be in a world of hurt - after he gets done interacting with his newfound friends in the criminal justice system ...

The report I read was right after the shooting so take this with a block of salt.

A man, who was a veteran, heard someone trying to get into his house so the vet grabbed his AR15. The Burglar To Be, B2B in modern texting parlance, ran and the veteran chased and fired a warning shot. The veteran said he was very deliberate in firing in to the ground and away from the B2B.
That may well be true ... however firing a high-powered/high-velocity rifle in a crowded urban environment (like an apartment complex ) ain't terribly bright any way ya wanna cut it ... particularly when one considers that the alleged perp was retreating, and there was no immediate threat of physical harm to either life or property to defend against at the time the shot was fired ...

There have been no "cheap shots" at Biden, he deserves every one of them. Even if you accept his "get a double barreled 12ga", his comments to shoot blindly "off the balcony" are totally irresponsible. One of the prime rules of gun handling "know your target and what is beyond." He is a total fail and what he says is total BS.

I'll bet his wife's Secret Service detail cringes at the thought of her having a shotgun!
