Okay here\'s a really dumb question

Does anyone make a mid mounted mower that is heavy duty ? AS in "brush hog " ? I've got a bunch of trees on the property ,and getting through them would be a problem with a rear mounted brush hog . A mid mount finish mower just wouldn't last . John

I've certainly never heard of a mid mount rotary cutter. Why is a rear mount such a problem? Is it because the rear mount will swing out on turns and you don't have room between the large trees? What are you trying to cut? Saplings, brush?

That is a pretty good question. I was wondering why he couldn't get a bush hog in there if he could get a MMM in there. But I didn't think of the turning thing and it may be a problem for him.

I will want to watch this post to see how it comes out.

Danny, You hit it on the head! Most of my property is Larch and Fir trees . Very closely planted . 6 ft or less . I'm sure I could get to most of it with a 3pt brush hog,but it would be a real pain . Most of what I want to cut is blackberry and blue berry bush . ,along with some multi florra rose . However there are some small stumps (Xmas tree cutting ) and rocks that I'd like to avoid . The swinging of a back mounted cutter would make for a lot of work avoiding obsticles . Just lazy, I suppose . Like I said , it is a dumb ??? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gifJohn

I used a walk behind blade before I purchased my tractor. It was manufactured by Bachtold and that thing worked like magic. I "mowed" right through strand after strand of 1-3 inch alder trees like they were grass. It was very similar to the DR. Mower you see but this thing was a little more suited for commercial use. It can go anywhere. You might want to check this out. I've personally never heard of or seen a mid-mount-hog. Maybe because they fear that too many things might get stuck underneath the tractor. When I brush hog sometimes saplings I mow over bend over spring back and need another going over. Just a guess /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Anticipate the turning radius you have and plan accordingly. In tight corners on the property's perimeter think of backing in to cut down brush, saplings, etc.

Good point Rancar. I do alot of backing into brush when using the hog.

I have a John Deere 6 foot MMM - That sucker is very very heavy - JD promotes their 5 foot mower as a 7 Iron and the 6 foot is even a thicker deck. A problem with a MMM would be you can't raise it very high.

I actually prefer backing in on heavy stuff. Cut a little, then move forward and look for those hidden tree stumps (which I have a lot of). Saves wear on the front and bottom of tractor. Probably a little overcautious but I don't have a lot of heavy hogging as a rule.
