Old Barbed Wired Fence Removal

We're finishing this exact process now. In our case, the barb wire has been up since someone was able to name dirt, dirt.,. The posts holding the wire is about the same. For us, simply cutting the wire between posts, then pulling each post out of the ground. A bon fire will be the next step..

Hopefully your tetnus (sp) shot is also up to date /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Old rusty barbed wire can be nasty stuff to deal with.

The best way we've found is remove all from the posts, then roll it up into about 3' diameter rolls (roll it up right off the ground as though you are rolling a tire.), then bury it - deep.

I just want to be clear here -- my method is to not cut the wire at all. Just cut the posts at ground level (or break them off) and roll it all up together. Bon fire is optional.

We got a small wooden spool from the electric company. We put a 2"X2" square metal tube into each rear stake pocket on our pickup truck. We put a metal pipe through the spool and attached the pipe to the stakes. We took out all of the fasteners on one strand of wire and wrapped one end around the spool. One guy drove the truck along the fence and the other turned the spool by hand to wind up the wire. You don't need to put much tension on the wire. When your'e done with one strand just move onto the others one at a time. We also use this method to install wire.

If you have wooden posts and a bunch of small bushes on the fence row, the best thing is a dozer.

Bury whatever gets scraped up.

You will be surprised how fast the wire comes off if you have a good pair of snips (I just use linesmans). Cut one side of a staple and if you cut between a burr and the staple you can pull the other side out without having to cut both sides. Just walk down the fence cutting wire and pulling it out to the open then when you are done you can walk back thru gathering it up. Then you can use the loader to pop the stubborn post out. I cleared 1 mile of 5 strand barb fence in two short days. The slowest part was driving to the dump site and unloading the wagon. Easiest thing to do was put the wire in the loader bucket and post in the wagon. That way you don't have to fight the wire a second time. I actually thought it was fun but then I also enjoy shingling roofs /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Have fun.
