Old car nostalgia ??

At least gas was cheaper back then, I remember it at two bits a gallon plus they pumped it, cleaned your windshield, checked your oil, swept out your car and gave you a dish or some green stamps. Remember those?

But we made 1.30 an hour. Times were tough with the gas crunch of 74 too.

Apologize for 'shameless pitch' if this is OT, but:

My 'old car' was a '80 Corvette (L-82, auto) until I replaced the frame and couldn't use the VIN # from either one, is thus "'87 Assembled". (a Catch 22 thing, and no more free catalogs from Ecklers or MidAmerica when registered as such)

Must be 30k mi on it by now, and I've had it since '81. It runs, but hasn't been 'on the road' since I've had a tractor (10 yrs or so). I'd much rather park the Deere or Terramite in there with the 'old bikes' ('62/'72, '75 [3], '80) that I don't ride much. ('89 plated)

Car has some rough edges (cardboard console/interior trim) and no more cat-conv or AC plumbing, 'underhood', but decent paint and it needs a home. So ... would trade for 3PH, SSQA, or stand-alone tree spade ... maybe another AMF-era Harley ... or consider cash offers. (do I hear 5K?) btw, f-glass vs glass tops ...

PM me for current pics of 'your' new 'old car'. :D (I'd wipe off the 'coon tracks for that ;))

Nostalgia and collecting is mostly done by those aged 35-60 with good health, cash and can make time . The collectable items tends to be something that Grandpa, Dad had or something that you wish you had between ages 10 and 25.

I hate to be a downer, but I've been down the old car road. Owned two high performance Mopars, one of which was a six barrel Road Runner. They were a lot of fun. I think the mistake people make when going this route is once it's restored it's like driving a new car. You just get in it a drive it, it's all fun. Trust me, it's a constant battle to keep them looking good and running. Wiring was one of the big issues I ran into.

Another car I owned was a 72 Sattelite Sebring, it was a two door hard top, 318. Not really super collectible but was easy to maintain and if it got rained on, I didn't care.

I now own a late model Challenger. It's still a battle to keep it clean, but it's a wash a wax thing with this car. With the old stuff, it was wash and wax, rewire half the car, set the points, rebuild the carb, fix the oil leak, hunt for obscure parts ETC. It's fun if you have the time.

Having grown up in the sixty's ,I was around most of these cars when new.Owned a few, sold my last one to purchase my first new tractor.Don't miss them at all but like to follow the auctions and see what they are selling for today.
Don't miss changing plugs& points at 10,000 miles, bias ply tires,no air conditioning, drum brakes and no safety equiptment.
I would purchase a modern "hot rod",Mustang,Camero or Challanger and get better mileage and performance and safety.

Anyone besides myself getting old car nostalgia? The older I get I want to buy a mustang, corvette and so on.The car can be from 1960,s up to early 1990,s ...

Would we agree on what we called an 'old' tractor? Best of those seem to be from the '60s, no?

Here in MI a car/truck 30 yrs old qualifies for "Historic Vehicle" plates, with limitations on driving vs everyday use. A '94 Corvette wouldn't make the cut for that, but any 'C3' would. btw, mine came with factory 8-track player after I'd been collecting cassettes for 10 yrs. It's 'old' now ...

Kind of at a crossroad with my collection which has taken over 45 years to assemble.

I've got the cars but not the place to enjoy them as they are spread out over multiple locations and shoe horned into storage... I do envy those with the setup to properly take care of a collection... storage, shop facilities, etc.

Insurance, both home and collector coverage is fire hydrant dependant and finding a rural carrier is getting real hard here in California... each inquiry starts with distance to fire hydrant... I was told I could have my own private fire department and it would not matter...

A lot of my old time friends have passed and I get calls asking if I would be interested in their cars.. without a proper place to keep them the only decision is to pass.

Cars are part of our heritage and something I have found fascinating since childhood...

I'd say if you have the proper facilities... go for it!

In my house garage is a '65 Chevelle hardtop 2 dr 2 speed auto ready for the road
in the back garage is a '64 Chevelle convertible 4 on floor SS (283 cu in) needing a lot of rebuilding. may be 5 - 10 years before it is finished.

I think that the "Resto Mods" are real popular because of the old look with modern convenience and performace.I could go for one of those if my interest returned to cars.I don't have the storage for even one any more.
