1974 MF135
I found , for sale a disc, plow, and cultivator for 250.00. The disc is supposed to be 5'. What should I look for when checking these out? I talked to the gentleman tonite. He is selling for a friend. It has been sitting on her property for a while, and she has no use for it. Im looking to use it behind a MF135, and plant a small garden. Any help would be appreciated, as I am new to this. I already have a 5' rotary cutter, and a 6' box blade. So I am looking to add to my collection. If these turn out to be a good buy, what else should I add, to help with gardening?
Thanks guys.
Neil

Sorry, I see I posted this thread in the wrong forum. Could one of the Moderatores please move this to the "Buying" section.

Also does anyone know where I can read up on buying used equipment? And what I should check and keep an eye out for?

Thanks
Neil

Kenfyoozed, I think you are in the correct section, sometimes it just takes a little longer for the right person (FarmwithJunk ;) ) to see the post. Did you see the implements last night? It sounds like from your post, that you are getting all three for $250?? Sounds like they maybe used for a garden trator... not for your MF135.

EDIT: I see from your photo that they are NOT for a garden tractor... the disk, itself would be worth $250

A 5' disc is a bit small for your tractor but what the heck, it's sounds like it's priced low.
Make sure the plow is not more than 2 bottom. Look for how much wear is on the points and shares.

He said, and I could see from pics, that it was a 3-point hitch. I havent seen them yet. I am trying to see them today, but its raining. Thanks for the help. Im sure I'll have more questions after I see them. I'll take my camera.
Neil

P.S. here is a picture I saw of the items

A 135 will play with a 5' disc. With the rear wheels set all the way in, a 5'er will still wipe out 99% of the tire tracks. You COULD use a 6' or 7' disc, but at that price.....!

Any 2-bottom plow in useable shape is worth the $250 all by itself.

The cultivator might bag $100 to $150.

Unless they're absolutely JUNK, that's a good buy.

If you're just gardening, you don't need the biggest, most extreme implements you can pull. I'd jump at a buy like that for your needs.

I just got back from looking at the set. Its pretty rusty, but seems like its all there. The "disc" on the disc would not turn. I expected that. On the cultivator the center pieces, I dont know what they are called, are almost ruted through. One worse than the other. The plow is a single bottom. I have attached some pics. Let me know what you think.

It's all light for your tractor but if just for a garden and low priced, what the heck. You can add weights to the disc after soaking the bearing in some kind of break free oil.
The tines can be replaced on the cultivator.
I can't see the plow real good. Check for wear on the front side of the board.
Will he throw in the trailer or free delivery?:D

Im sure he would let me use his trailer. Its only about 20 miles from my house. Actually about 10 as the crow flys. I thought it might be a little light as well, but then im only using it for a small home garden. My garden will probably only have 2 rows, but almost 100 feet long. I thought I would use my tractor for my garden instead of buying a nice walk-behind rototiller.

Those look like a brand that was sort of the "King Kutter" of the day back in the 70's. I believe they MIGHT be IMCO brand. The red w/ white pinstripes was their "colors".

I thought I had posted this, but I did find a tag that said Independence Mfg. Co. So I guess that would make it IMCO.

Farmwithjunk, I sent you a PM.
Thanks

Rototiller, 4-5 ft wide. You can find these used pretty easily. I have a $300 used Yanmar RS-1200 rototiller (4-ft wide) that I use to put in the veg garden.

Works fine behind my Kubota B7510HST, but it's a little undersized for my 1964 MF-135 diesel

I bought a used 7-ft wide Ferguson tandem disc for the 135 ($200).

Sand blasted and painted the frame. Needed to weld a new bracket onto the hitch.

The blades are in good shape. Don't forget to lube the bearings on the disc gangs.

I'd go for those implements at $250. You can always fix them up and get 'em working.

Kenfy,

I bet the disks will turn. The disks don't turn independently. All the disks on one gang turn together. So trying to turn the disk that is hanging off the edge of the trailer won't work since the other ones are sitting on the trailer deck.

For $250, I'd buy that stuff and stop by the auto supply store on the way home and get a couple of cans of break-free.

And if you are going to take it home on that trailer, you might want to bring some extra tie downs. That load looks a bit precarious.

Around here we call that stuff hedgerow equipment. I love to shop in those hedgerows! You generally can't beat the price and even if it's rusty and ugly, with a little effort the stuff works well enough. Often it was very good quality stuff that was outgrown and replaced. Keep an eye out on those backroads and you can find stuff just sitting forgotten. I've paid $50 for someone's so-called junk and am still using it. If it's something you rarely need or use , why buy new and let it rust away as well?

Well, I finally was able to keep the implements up. It took a week of phone tag. Of course the trailer tires had loss air so I could use the one they were sitting on. The 16' trailer, that I am co-owner with, was in use by others so i couldn't use it to take my tractor to load these up . So i was forced to use a 5x12. Well the disc wouldnt fit, it was to wide, so i had to turn it sideways and wrestle it on. I had my atv and used the winch somewhat to help. But the plow and cultivator I had to actually pick up by hand and place on the trailer on top of the disc! I thought I was going to have a heart attack doing this, because I am a big 'ol boy. Anyways I made it home safe and sound. I was able to get it all loaded right before it started to rain.

I do have one question. I have never used a plow before.I did notice that the "plow" part was able to move back and forth. Is it supposed to do this? Also , the lift pins are not parrallel. One is about 4-6 inches lower. It looks like it was mage this way from IMCO. How does this work?

I/ll get pictures when I can. Also what is the best way to remove the rust? I have a small "back pack" sand blaster. I have used it to "strip" a sail boat trailer. Shoule I use this or is there an eaiser way?:p

Here's a pic of a disc that the former owners had just about decided to sell for junk. Took a fair amount of work to get it back in decent shape but I think it will be worth it.
