Older large tractors

Your are right, that is why you also find a lot of 4wd tractors at auctions being sold already rebuilt. I thought of buying an old 4wd to rebuild for fun, hook it up to a 6 or 8 bottom plow (depending on what I got) and use it for a plow tractor. Don't need it but it would be fun /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Robert I'm just curious where you get the $10k #'s to rebuild? A 4020 will cost about $2000. A 4430 about $2500. I know that is Deere and I know that others are more expensive but $10K? John Deere has a program where for $12,000 they will completely rebuild a 4430 from the ground up.

Doc, I am refering to the artics, $10k is a average number to rebuild one starting with the engine and working thru to the rear. Most of the 4wd's that are in this time period need a lot of work to the cab and such as well and as you know it adds up quick. Also, have you ever heard how much the Knize conversion cost for the JD artics. I don't remember but if I recall correctly it was over $20k for Kinze to repower and soup up the old JD 4wd's. 4wds are different from MFWDs when it comes to repair cost as the parts prices are usually a lot higher because of a limited production. Of course area also plays into it as you don't find a lot of 4wd's in the junkyards around here so used parts are hard to find.

Oh yeah I agree with you on the 4wd tractors for sure. I wouldn't even want one of them. About all they are good for is pulling a BIG chisel plow, disc, etc. You need to have a whole lot of acres to make one of those work for you.

That is another reason they go cheap at auctions. But the old ones are still fun to fix up and play with if you have the space and room to work on them. I wonder how large a finish mower one could pull /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Guy down the road from me uses a big 4WD JD (not sure of the model) with at least a 25' finishing mower to take care of his airstrip and surrounding area. It's quite the ultimate lawn mower!

Dual turf tires all the way around I presume. Now wouldn't that be something /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah, we don't really *need* such a large machine (about 400 acres) but I was thinking one would be fun to have around if I could get it cheap enough.

Plus it'd be nice to have somehting to pull a disc ripper, or even a large set of of discs or cultivator and really speed things up.

Fun until you have to fuel the thing. They really suck the fuel when plowing. Not sure what they burn mowing, raking or baling. , never heard of such. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Bet you'd get a few stares though.

The older 4wd tractors are cost prohibitive to work on. We recently had a customer that spent 30K on a 7520 JD. It made a real nice tractor but it is still an old 4wd tractor that is only worth about 6K. The other negative to working on a 4wd is that everything is big and extremely heavy. Unless you are working in a well equipped shop with an overhead hoist, it can be dangerous to work on these units. As far as JD goes, the parts are 90% readily available. Good luck if you are considering restoring one.
