In the second picture, that looks like a needle valve. Is that a knob that you can turn? In the last picture, I bet there was some strain on that hose out of that cylinder. It should have had a 90 fitting installed there. Look on the broken hose and see if you can read the pressure ratng.

That broken hose had a bad crimp...start with a new hose rated for 3000psi....did the hose "break" when you tried to extend cylinder?? or at retract??? If it was at extend, you have to check so there is nothing that creates backpressure in the rod side hose down to valve.....

Where does the high pressure line go to from the pump the loader valve or the rock shaft housing?
BTW was the loader up when you filled it with oil?

I'm pretty sure the loader was down when we filled it. The hose is rated 3500 PSI. The line blew while we were retracting the bucket inward. We were past full retraction and still on the control. The hose was fairly long with a wide sweep to the fitting. A 90 degree fitting might be better, but i still think you'd need to sweep the hose to prevent kinking. It didn't seem overly stressed or kinked.

Here are a few more pics i just took. This one shows 3 lines from the pump. The top line is a big fat one. It goes into the top of the pump, on a fitting that looks like a water pump housing. Then the line towards the front of the tractor, the black line (eventually it becomes a black line), goes directly to the control valve for the loader. The 3rd line is a red one and both it and the fat line go into a square steel box (is this the rock shaft housing?). I think this feeds the 3 PH.

this pic is showing the pump lines going into the "square steel box"

and this pic shows a line from the loader valve, with a square head on top of the metal fitting. It looks sorta like a 3/8" ratchet head. Is this a PRV? Or some other type of valve? I assume that square head can be turned/adjusted for something. it's a bit hard to see, but it's almost dead center of the photo.

The white looking thing on the tee fitting, could also be a cover for a test port for the hydraulics.

it looks like a cover I can twist off. Maybe it's the needle valve you originally thought.

I think J_J might be right about pressure test point....take cap off and Please take DETAILED pic on EVERYTHING....

So you have a 2 stack pump I would look on the loader valve to see if has a PCV and check the pressure and adjust it for 2250.
Also take fill plug out and move loader up and down and extend and retract bucket to make sure the reservoir is not overfilled.there should be a vented cap on reservoir.

as far as I know, my resevoir is under the seat. i have to remove the return line to fill it. I can't see a level plug anywhere. my neighbour says I should remove every single hose, cylinder, etc.. clean everything out with clean solvent & compressed air, then go from there. I think whe he owned his business they often saw issues with contaminated hydraulic systems.

I looked in the repair manual and I think i have a 2 stage pump for the power steering & the hydraulics. I'm wondering if my issue might be in the "double acting auxillary control valve. There is a pressure relief spring in there, and I'm told sometimes the springs go. Or maybe it's gummed up in there. My hydraulic fluid seemed pretty dark, almost like motor oil.

You don't have a 2 STAGE pump what you have is 2 separate pumps stacked together,1 pump was to run hyd system and the other for power steering the system looks to be cobbed together now, if you have to remove a return line to fill and it's on the top I would say that is where the fill and vent used to be now you have nowhere for the system to vent. the first thing you should do is get a manual for the tractor and find out what the specs were on the new pump they put in because the pressure relief for the PS had a lower volume pump.

2 Folks (at least) have suggested using a gauge to measure pressure on the lines. This makes 3. See what is happening - My 806 IH runs around 2500 psi. steve
With the suspicions of missing or malfunctioning relief please keep in mind that overpressured gauges can blow as well. For safety you need a small restrictor in the gauge line. I have done this by threading an appropriate sized set screw into the input end of the hose crimp ID....[the minumum size where your tap will grab]. The hole is tapped in the direction of flow and setscrew is stopped by the bottom of the threaded region so it cant unscrew. The oil is restricted by the helix to just a drop or three a second on the output where your gauge is. Once the line is filled with oil the pressure reads fairly quick -- several seconds cold to about a second hot.... and safe if the gauge blows.
