Oil & Fuel On road diesel -vs- off-road diesel

The off road diesel has the red dye in it to distinguish it from on road diesel. The off road, or ag diesel, is the same except for that red dye, and of course the 70 cents a gallon cheaper it is than the on road diesel.

More accurately the dye distinguishes between taxable and non taxable rather than fuel type verses fuel type.

There is not as much demand for off road gas as there is for diesel. For off road gas, at least in WI, you file for a refund when you file your income tax. I suggest you have very clear proof of use with bullet proof documentation.

When most tractors ran on gasoline instead of diesel, this debate would have raged (if personal computers and the internet had been invented yet) over the difference in on-road and off-road gasoline. I remember my uncle's farm tank was full of dyed gasoline. He would sneak a few gallons in his Impala once in a while, and fill up Dad's car when we would come to visit. My new diesel tank looks exactly like his old tank, but alas since it is diesel my chances of petty theft from the tax man are nil. Probably a good thing. In the 60's, I imagine that getting caught with red gas would have amounted to a parking ticket. Today, I imagine Homeland Security, TSA, FBI, ATF, FDA, FTC, IRS, USDA, DMV, DOT, HHS, FHA, and any other acronym you can think of would be so far up your heiny you would feel them in your throat if you dared to cheat them out of a nickel.
