On site fuel storage

One word of caution, Dan. When you read about these fuels tanks, most of us are having it delivered and getting "off road" diesel. The biggest difference is that it does not have a road tax on it and typically costs anywhere from $.90 to $1.10 per gallon. Take note that it is illegal to run this fuel in your vehicles. I'm not tyring to be the TBN police here, just letting you know!

As long as you are not running on the roads you can run the off-road in your vehicle. If your vehicle is farm licensed you can also run it in that if the job your are doing is related to your farm, ie pulling a grain wagon.

so you guys say that an auto shutoff nozzle takes 7 gpm to trigger, well not the napa one i have, i made all stainless parts for the inside and converted it to a keg tap, i had the part that goes to the keg but was missing the valve on the end, so a gas pump nozzle seemed like a neat idea, i had one around already anyhow. if ya hold it in the cup it will shutoff when it gets up to the nozzle and im sure most kegs dont put out 7gpm. also i know of a local farmer that uses a auto shutoff one on a 100 gallon gravity feed tank and it seems to work fine.

Dan

I'd stay away from the VW. Had a TDI bug. It was in the shop 5 times for the windows not closing. The air conditioner had to be replaced. The injectors had to be replaced. At 28 ,000 miles I complained loudly to the dealer. Dealer gave me an OK deal ( not great) and I traded for a Passat GLX wagon with V6 and 4Motion. In eleven months the car has been in the shop eight times. Its currently at the dealers with the interior completely torn out. Every time it rained water poured into the vehicle and soaked the carpets. This is the second or third time they have torn out the interior. I'm seeking a refund under the lemon law.

That's good to know, Mark. The information I got was from both a nozzle manufacturer and an electric pump manufacturer. As is often the case, I guess our results may vary. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

>>why not just get a heating oil 275 gal tank?

Thats what I use...mine was here when I bought the place, but at least in my area, there are many free for the taking as people convert from oil to natural gas for heat, they are usually more than happy to get rid of it...I've seen plenty of free ads for these types of tanks in the local papers.

Gerard,

We might get a larger tank but I have to check with the local
EPA type regulations. It was mentioned elsewhere on TBN
that there might be a regulations on the larger tanks. If the
regulations are reasonable then I'll go with the larger tanks.

TonyC,

I'll be getting on road fuel. I'm hoping that if I buy in bulk
I'll be able to save a little money. I'm kinda doubtful that this
will happen since even if I save five cents a gallon and I'm
buying 200 gallons a month that is only 10 dollars save.
Course that is 120 dollars a year.

The other reason to buy is convience. It would be real nice
to just pull up to our "pump" instead of at a station. My wife
really does not like to stop at gas stations with two kids...

The third reason is that we would have bulk fuel for when the
power goes out. Over the last few years our area has lost
power for at least a few days to a week every year. If we
have a couple hundred gallons of fuel we won't have to
worry to much with running a generator.

You can get the on road taxes back if you use the on road
tax off road. Whew, that is hard to follow. I fill out the
tax form every years to get my on road fuel tax back from the
diesel used in the tractor. Gets me back a few bucks. And I
do mean a few bucks!

RonL,

Thanks for the info.

There is a website for VW diesel owners.

http://www.tdiclub.com/

Its been awhile since I read through the site but there was
discussions about the reliability on some of the VWs. I'll
keep your experience in mind.

Yeah, a while back Virginia used to give us back the on-road tax for tractors and boats. They decided we didn't need that money so they stopped. As with most things, they didn't ask for my opinion before hey did it! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
