Kinda related - I brought some junk from the ranch to the yard sale of my neighbor in town. One item I described as 'Barn Find' was an old metal breadbox that I had put on the hood of my tractor to create some 'ambiance' in the picture illustrating it.

Late in the day a couple of thug types showed up at the yard sale and asked if we had sold the tractor. I explained the tractor was 100 miles west of there and was just used to pose that photo, it wasn't for sale.

I really got the impression that these characters weren't farm types at all. Rather, they saw that photo and figured we would have a few thousand dollars cash in hand from selling the tractor - and that was what had attracted them to come visit us.

Not necessarily c-list, buy I hate when dealers don't list prices. The whole $call tag irks me.

If you really think the prices are too good to list, then they are too good to be true.

I will say there is an Exmark dealer one state over from me that has a smoking deal right now on a zero turn and oh how I wish I had the money to go buy it! It's a top of the line Exmark 60" demo leftover from last year with 63 hours on it for $9995! This is a $13-14k lawnmower all day long. Add has been on there for months and he can't sell it. I drool over that thing Everytime I'm on CL!

What is the best way to buy something for cash that is worth thousands and not get rolled by a scam seller? I would hate to meet a stranger in an unknown neighborhood thinking he knows you have a pile of cash on you. People have been killed that way as I heard on the news. I have bought low ticket items on CL and sold things that were worth a few thousand and it never was a problem, but I would have an uneasy feeling carrying a pile of cash into a trap. I used to CC but moved and haven't reregistered but I would feel a little safer from that standpoint.

I understand meeting in a safe spot in the daylight, if that is possible. Maybe, put the cash in a nearby bank before the meeting.

I've thought about this as well. I've never bought any big ticket items off of CL before either. I think I spent $2500 at the most on an item but it turned out he was the ex brother in law of a girl my friend was married to so I had no worries then. In all honesty your gut will tell you if it feels right or not after talking to the seller on the phone.

I sold a hydraulic power unit that I had listed on Ebay a while back for like $600. The guy was from Chicago (about 90 minutes away) and drove out to look at it. I am pretty far out, it's about 20 minutes to the nearest town with over 2000 people. Anyway he looks at it and agrees to buy it, then asks where the nearest atm is. I directed him to the town and I figured it was his "out" to not buy it, and did not really expect him to return. Sure enough he was back about an hour later with the cash.

I always wondered why he had done it that way, but I guess maybe this is the reason. Not that $600 is that much, but I'm sure people have been mugged/killed for less. Maybe he was just skeered of us redneck country folk? Then again, I guess being from the city would probably make anyone cautious.

Guy keeps running this old (never does give a date on it) time shovel excavator for 29k. Renews the ad every couple days, been doing so for a year. You want to just call the guy and tell him "haul it in for scrap"

Certainly not worth 29k, but I don't think I could ever bring myself to scrap that thing... I think it's pretty neat really, but I am admittedly a bit of a hoarder. Of course, if the boom is missing it's pretty useless I guess, and the $6k or more for scrap may get temping eventually.

I couldn't tell, I see the short section of boom that goes to the bucket (jib?) But couldn't tell if the main boom was present. The way he worded it sounded like it could have not been there.

As I said, I think it would be cool to have, especially if it's complete... even though I have absolutely no use for it. Hmmmm... there is this creek that runs between my neighbor and me- he uses about a 20 ton excavator occasionally to clean it up. Imagine his surprise if I showed up to "help"
