I agree with your general point, many parents tend to be a bit over protective.

I agree. Part of the problem is that society is forcing parents in that direction. "Oh my gosh, you let your 8 year old out of your sight?"

It's a lot different than when I was kid in the 50's.
We rode hundreds of miles on bicycles and didn't know helmets existed. In the summer we would be out all afternoon, sometimes a mile from home off in a woods or whatever, no adults around. Nobody worried about us.

Yes, same here. Well, mom probably worried, but she still let me go.

How does a child learn responsibility when they are responsible for nothing on their own initiative?

We seem to be teaching the opposite in our society these days. That's where the thread started. Deere, not dad, is responsible for careful operation of the mower.

Definitely a tragedy and a life long struggle ahead for the child, No one is really to blame for such an accident, although there could have been something that led up to this accident, I personally have never allowed my son or do I my Grandchildren to ride along with me on my Tractor or mowers,
Not! to say this is what may or may not have happened, But if a small child is let to do so? then at any and most all opportunity he or she will try to attempt to go to the mower again, thinking it is perfectly alright to ride at will,..... I have made the mistake in letting my small dog ride with me in my truck and now everytime I get on the tractor he is right there wanting to ride on it with me, so now I have to put him up or be sure he is put up before I get on my tractor so that I dont have to worry about running over him,.......
this is Probably Not the case in this childs accident but I am afraid it is quite possable to happen.

The problem with liberals not being able to mind their own business when it comes to the safety of others children is that they are black and white. here is no "Gray" area. Someone will say that I could hit a huge pothole and bounce him out to land under the spinning rotary cutter. problem is that I may be doing a WHOPPING 1 mile an hour,
Anyone who believes a village is required to raise a child needs a bit of an awakening. It takes a pair of parents with their feet on the ground to do it properly.

Yeah, and no way a bee is going to sting me or my 2 year old and make him spin out of my grasp and be run over by this here tractor!!!(Banjo's playing in the back ground)

Maybe the father was hoping to soothe some of the guilt he feels by trying to fix some of the blame on deere.I don't think that family will ever be the same as before the accident, So sad. As for letting kids ride on equipment..how do you teach them responsibility by doing something irresponsible:confused::confused::confused:

I've read many posts about tractor safety and you'd be appalled at the attitudes, can't tell me what to do, oh, I'm watching nothing will happen. Some "City Folk" that move to the burbs think it's a hoot to give the kids a ride especially in the FEL bucket. Graphic, Upsetting ----YES! Some people need to be hit square between the eyes with a Hickory axe handle, they just don't get it.

Has anyone here ever experienced first hand and up close, watched a 2 year old tot get run over by a 3000lb car? I have! and it has stuck with me for many years,...back in the mid 80's while droping off an employ at his mobile home in a park, I noticed this small child running behind a parked car and the older brother giving chase, about that same time I seen backup lights and the car started backing up and the older brother steped out of the way while the 2 year old got completely ran over by the rear tire of the car, as I jumped out of my truck to run over to help, the mom driving the car unaware of what she had done put it back into drive and ran over the child a 2nd time,
A note: to the people that think their children need to learn how to Handle rattle snakes in order to keep from being bitten! I'd rather my grandchildren know the dangers that can happen to them and stay away from those dangers then to see them get hurt or killed, there will be plenty of time to teach them the ropes or how to be a redneck just not at such an early age, I'm sure this young mother wanted her child to grow up as a normal Redneck Boy by letting him play outside with his older brother while the dad inside with his beer watching TV wanting to relax with the kids out of his hair, in fact this same child many times had hung me a middle finger as i pass by his house and I thought to myself this child gona growup a redneck! Sadly was I wrong!
she said later that she was just trying to back the car into the street to wash it,
although now she can never wash the blood from her hands,
so People! are we not educated enough to know what is safe for our children...
