I have to deal with a small bridge on a little traveled county road. The bridge is rated for 4 tons, wide enough for 1 car in either direction and has no siderails. It really is rediculous. My Ford F250 weighs more than 4 tons.

You sure about this? My F-250 is in the 4,000 pound range, give or take a little, which is only 2 tons.

From what I have been able to gather, my current F 250 crew cab, 4x4, diesel weighs just over 7000 lbs according to those who have weighed similar trucks on scales with fuel. I also carry a toolbox, gooseneck hitch etc but the bed is otherwise empty most of the time. I probably have at least 200 lbs in chains and binders in the tool box. Probably 200 lbs in hand tools and too much other crap to mention in the tool box. My toolbox is a large chest and I don't even bolt it down to prevent theft. I just lock it if needed. I would guess it weighs about 500-600 lbs. If they can lift it to steal it, I couldn't stop them anyway.;) Add myself and a couple of other people and it is easy to get over 8000 lbs.

I got ticketed at a weigh station once pulling a trailer with a Kubota B7100 on it - a subCUT. The trailer was rated for 7K and was easily under the limit. However, I got ticketed on the truck because it weighed over 8000 lbs. (noncomercial plates at that time were rated for 8000 lbs) That truck was a F250 v10 gasser, crewcab with less tools in the box back then. I probably had the tongue weight on the trailer a little too heavy and probably near 750 lbs because the tractor was a little closer to the front of the trailer than needed instead of over the trailer axles. I was the only person in the truck. I think my total truck weight was about 8600 lbs. After that incident I got farm plates and now can haul up to 26,000 lbs on the truck and trailer combined.

I used to have a 2003 Corvette (aluminum block, fiberglass body etc.) which had a curb weight of about 3400 lbs. It would seem your F250 should weigh more than 4000 lbs.

Didn't think about the diesel, or that there could be such a huge difference in weights. I'll take your word for it as to what your truck weighs and not comment on it again. LOL

7.3 diesel engine weighs about 1000 pounds. My F-250 weighs 8200 lbs.

My F350 CC 4x4 8 foot bed SINGLE Rear Wheels is 7500ish pounds somewhat empty. :D Somewhat being that there was a tool box with a bunch of stuff in the back. I would guess the truck is at 7300ish pounds now that the box is out of the truck. Its stock other than the 2x4s in the back to hold cargo in place. :D

I think the only difference in my F350 and similarly equiped F250 is an extra spring(s) and maybe depending on what was in the parts bin axle(s). Maybe. :D

GVW is 9,900 pounds.

A farm I used to work on had metal bridge built in the 20-30's. Scared the heck out of me to drive across that bridge even in a little MF 135. Never could figure out WHY the bridge was there. There was one old farm house served by the bridge. And that was an expensive bridge to almost no where. It was a small house too with newspapers for wall paper. The creek could be driven across most of the time. The only thing I could figure is that a relative of a big wig lived in that house. :D

Later,
Dan

I am not sure where this info came from, but Ford hasn't made a truck under 4,000 lbs since the early 70's. (if ever)

The Ford Ranger is now the only compact PU you can buy in the US, since the
others have all gone upscale. The 09 4x2 4-cyl Ranger is slightly over
3000# dry. Most Rangers are more like 3500-4000, depending on motor,
extended cab, 4x4, etc.

Even my small Taco (04) came out to over 4000# on the scale. More
reliable sources list the F-250 starting at 5500+#, but most are more than
7000#.

I've seen comment elsewhere that an F250 (not sure which years, might have been the older 7.3) with diesel and 4WD has PRECIOUS LITTLE payload capacity, a few hundred pounds.
As in "forget about ANY gooseneck trailer with THAT truck" and almost any tongue weight can result in BAD numbers for the rear axle on the scales.
Weigh station officers KNOW which vehicles are marginal with what sort of loads behind them.

Y'know, bridge load limits really ARE a joke in MANY, MANY places.
9 tons posted ?
I'd bet the locals are (WERE) in the habit of hauling well over 20 tons over that bridge.
That tractor ? first time over that bridge ? I doubt it (-:
