Operating a Post Hole Digger

   / Operating a Post Hole Digger #11
I bought a PHD to make holes for the carport post I built. I also added a 12" extension to the auger, which gave me a consistent 4'6" depth. Actually got a couple to around 5' deep. I also used the "sona" tubes and extended them above ground by about 16" (should have gone to 24" I now think). After all the work was done I sold the PHD, extn and auger for almost what I paid for it new - all bought on sale. I also put 3 pieces of 5/8" rebar down in the holes prior to filling with concrete. So far in three years they all look to be good (post footings).

I asked nearly the same question here a couple of years ago when I built my PHD. One trick not mentioned here is finishing the hole. Once you hit your depth, stop the digging and pull up with the drill not turning. It will capture a LOT of the dirt, once above ground give it a quick spin and it will throw off all the dirt.

The 60 psi loading would be due to increased snow loads? That would be a LOT of snow- only damming would cause that.

Some places in Mi. can get a LOT of snow in one storm and if it's wet snow, it get's VERY heavy fast! SE Mi., at times is one of those places...
